Battery Replacement 2011 TDV8 4.4

I know this topic has been covered before, but I thought I would post a series of photos taken when I did the job today. It is not straightforward on the late model L322, because an ECU and a battery crash disconnect device has been fitted in the battery bay, making everything a tight squeeze.

First you need to raise the bonnet to the service position. The balljoint at the end of each gas strut is secured by a small spring clip. Lever it free with a small screwdriver, being careful that it does not ping off. You will need some help to support the bonnet while you do both sides.

Secure the bonnet in the upright position by rotating and engaging this spring clip.

Remove this plastic flap to gain access to the negative pole of the battery

Remove the clamp from the negative pole, and also disconnect this small snap fit connector. Use a small screwdriver to lever up the plasic tag facing you, then separate the connector. Allow about 20 mins for all capacitors etc to discharge before proceding.

Remove this plate by undoing the two 5 point Torx Security Screws. (You probably won't have a tool for this, but they are available on Ebay.)

The ECU which sits at the front of the battery compartment is held by a single 10mm nut. Use an extension bar on your 10mm socket to remove, and don't drop it!

You can now lift the ECU to gain access to the two large multi pin connectors. Unlock and rotate the big red levers to remove.

There is one final connector on the back of the ECU. Separate this and move the ECU out of the way.

You now have the space to remove the old battery. It is very heavy and awkward to extract. Get some help if you can. I did it myself using a stool for some extra height, and some padding on the edge of the engine bay.

Fitting the new battery is just the reverse process. The only tricky bit is fitting the 10mm nut which secures the ECU, as the space is too tight for your hand. I coated the nut with grease so that it would stay in the socket whilst lowering it into place and doing it up. Re-connect the negative pole last. Finally, you need to fire up your IID Tool to tell the system that the battery has been changed.

What is this battery disconnect device? Can't one just disconnect the battery starting with the neg.?If this car needs a battery far away from the stealers can you just replace?I have the special 5 point Torx tool to remove the ECU's Thumbs Up Only have the iCarsoft tool, planning to get the GAP tool. Can you replace the battery without telling the car it has a new battery...what will happen if you don't tell it? 2012 TDV8 Vogue SE 4.4

I understand the battery disconnect device automatically disconnects the battery if the car thinks it's been in an accident. It's not a device/tool that you need to buy to disconnect the battery. Does it use a small explosive to fire the connector off the battery in a crash?

No idea why you need to tell the car the battery has been changed....no doubt more knowledgeable folk will be along soon....

Great write up Thumbs Up

Do you really have to code a new battery thought?

I don’t have a iid tool. So does this mean I can’t change my own battery? Regards

I changed my battery back in July last year but did not reset the car even though I have an iid.
Most owners do re-set, but some were reporting that having done so the new battery was not getting fully charged, so I decided to wait a bit and see how it went.... It has been fine and still not reset.

Also, I found that I did not need to unplug the multi connector on the control unit, because like Nino I had removed the air box, their was sufficient slack in the harness to simply move it to the side and lift the old battery out.
