Tailgate rust prevention

Hi folks,

With the weather being good I decided to treat the tailgate for the usual rust at the edges.

I noticed a few bubbles at the inside edge at the bottom, the rust had not made through the paint so I wanted to take preventative action to avoid it happening. When I took the trim off I could see the rust in the seems.. clearly the water sits there causing rust.

Step 1: Take the trim off which is held by 2 screws and retaining clips which come off easily. Beware as the edge of the plastic trim is really sharp. I used Dynax S-50 spray which comes with a tube very handy to treat behind the bit where the Range Rover badge is.

Step 2: Reach out to the cavities from the voids, spray the treatment and pull the tube for full coverage.

Step 3: Once you are happy with the full coverage from left to right, put a sheet on the floor (excess liquid drips until it cures from the two drain holes on either side) and leave it tilted for few hours. I left it alone while I cut the hedge Smile

Mine is out of warranty so the idea of having to replace the tailgate is not good. Hopefully this will look after it. The Dynax stuff has got good reviews so fingers crossed.. Hope this helps folks any questions give me a shout. Current:

I did this with Dynax S50 on my 2003 a few years back. No rust yet. Or at least, no rust on the tailgate, now the rear of the sills is a different matter, didn't do them in time!! Drives:

Yes of course, it's behind the plastic sill finisher inside the rear door shuts where the arch meets the sill. I only spotted it when it surfaced above the plastic sill trim (as bubbled paint). I haven't removed anything to look at it as I think it's likely to be quite bad on mine (I don't really want to know!). I drilled a hole in the arch liner and pumped it full of Dynax as well as tucking it behind the plastic finisher. I just hope is slows progress a bit. Drives:

Hi

Does the Dynax also kill any rust which may be present? I too have some slight bubbling and wonder if this product is only a preventative and not a cure??

Do these rust because of ice and snow in the winters? I'm in southern Texas and only have to deal with rain. We've had snow 4 or 5 times in my 20 years living here!

Its a design fault Les Paul but think you might be ok in Texas as its a totally different climate.. No harm in applying it for peace of mind though.

I could see mind was started to rust in between the seem.. before putting it back I could see the rust was nicely covered with Dynax stuff so am really pleased. Current:

Instead of removing the cappings could you not use the drain holes to insert the product? The tubes supplied are quite long and slim enough to pass inside via the drain holes. John

yes but it wont get all the way through behind the RR badge. This way i had full coverage i.e. 2 inches up the rear panel and about the same at the bottom panel.

There are only 2 screws anyway and if you are going through the effort may as well do it properly. Current:

Any update on how well the Dynax S50 is performing ? I’ve seen many products that say you can go over rust that don’t really work, how well is it working for you? I’ve been using Fluid Fulm/Wool Wax in the states and that does work well and it’s stopped the rust for me but since it’s always liquid in the summer it drips non-stop
