Classic Car MOT Exemptions

Looks like your 40 year old classic no longer needs an MOT...

I would have thought maybe a classic car version of the test (with very relaxed emissions etc) would make more sense than none at all. But either way along with classic car tax exemption rolling alongside it is good news than tighter regs. Tom

In Ireland it's a 30 year rolling to qualify for classic tax, €56 per year and only cars registered after 1980 have to be tested, everything before is exempt.

Would have been nice if the test exemption rolled with the year then everything pre 1987 here would be exempt.

I am far from sure if this is a good move and has put a lot of cats amongst the pigeons.
2 of my toys will no longer require testing, I am fairly handy with the spanners and regularly check all my cars but have had things highlighted to me at MOT in the past. I will be talking to my tester and getting him to do a non official test.
They have also changed the rules on modifications and alterations. The most significant effect on our type of vehicles is series Land Rovers with galvanised after market chassis having to go on to a Q plate, not as bad for their owners as Bugatti and Aston Martin owners who could get totally shafted. letters not necessarily in the right order

As far as I am aware you could still take an exempt vehicle for an MOT and get a certificate regardless of the fact that it is an exempt vehicle if you did wish

I suppose the theory is that if you do have 40 year old car you are taking care of it anyway.

What about a barn find 1970's RRC? Could you just get it started tax it and drive it whilst praying all the rust holds together? Shocked 405 AB exec seats Baltic and Cirrus

The above is quite a scary prospect. Something that has been off the road for a number of years but doesn't need an MOT could be a death trap and no one has to check it! Alex

I must admit, I've always been a bit confused my this in Ireland, that a car registered in 1980 would have to be tested, but an older car, and potentially more dangerous due to age, corrosion, poor maintenance, condition etc. didn't need to be tested.

This is why in Ireland, late 70's models are more desirable as you don't need to go to the bother or expense of having them tested.

Having said that, isn't there an onus on the driver/owner to maintain a vehicle in a safe and roadworthy condition?

I think this has come up before, that all the test proves is that a vehicle (of any age) was in a roadworthy condition at the time of testing, can't really say how safe or roadworthy it would be after 6 months although the certificate may still be in date.

Might start to see insurance companies having a look at this, lower premiums for cars with a cert, even if not legally required.

There is something else too.

They are cracking down on cars that have been altered. So resto-mods will have to carry a Q plate from now on.

That’s not quite right. A vehicle that is exempt from an mot by age can’t be bought out of a barn (for example) taxed (free historic tax) and insured, then placed on the road.
It would have to go through an mot first. Once it has past an mot, further tests would be an option, but even though it would not need any further mot’s, it would still need to be maintained in a roadworthy condition.
I think the authorities take the view that an mot exempt vehicle is usually looked after by enthusiasts, therefore is usually maintained to a reasonably high standard and would be expected to pass an mot at any time if it were submitted for one.
Enthusiasts generally look after their valuable classics. There won’t be many undesirables purchasing a classic vehicle then running it on a shoestring budget.

This is not something new. Commercial vehicles manufactured before 1960 have been exempt from a vehicle test for some years, so this is most likely an harmonisation of the rules for all classic vehicles.

Why would a barn find have to go through an mot first? Is this a legal requirement? I don't know.

Also I'm still not sure what a classic car actually is. Shocked 405 AB exec seats Baltic and Cirrus

A barn find or any vehicle which did not have an mot after the introduction of the pre 1960 exemption would first have to be mot'ed, etc before being used on the road.

Here is a long discussion on the topic from the Series 2 Club forum.
