I'm away tonight but from memory I turned over the engine and looked at the timing mark on the crank case and the first two inlet and exhaust cam lobes on the left bank looking at the engine have to be pointing towards each other at 45 degrees which gets you near and then I had a socket bar on the crank bolt and wiggled that back and forth slightly while inserting the pin in the flywheel with the other hand, it's easier than it sounds. If you are not on the compression stroke the lobes will not point to each other

Yes, my thoughts were doing it that way too but they tell you, every where you read to do it before you remove the crank shaft pulley.

I wanted to crack the bolt first as you need to turn the engine over to line up the holding tool so once i had loosened the bolt I then carried on with the locking procedure and removing all the other gear
