Hi all.
At the beginning of this week I carried out an oil and filter change with no problems. Filter was aftermarket (Rimmer Bros) and about 9.5 litres of fully synthetic 5W-30 oil went in.
This morning, after a short run of about ten minutes I noticed the oil warning light was flickering whilst at idle and a 'stop engine' warning came up on the display.
Everything is fine as soon as it comes off idle.
I'm not a great believer in coincidence and am therefore worried the oil change may have something to do with it. But why?
The oil level is fine and the engine sounds fine.
Has anyone else experienced this?

I would be tempted to swap the filter for a genuine one immediately and make sure that the nipple is correctly located in the housing.
I'm possibly overly cautious but I got my fingers burnt many years ago by saving exactly £3.50 on an aftermarket filter that failed and cost me just under £2K in repairs

I agree about the filter. I'm going to go to my local dealer in the morning and get an OEM filter.

I'm curious regarding your comment about the nipple. Other than it pointing downwards (presumably it is there to stop the filter being fitted inverted) I can't see any other reference to correct positioning of it. I've looked in the workshop manual and all it says on the subject is:

11. Install a new oil filter cover O-ring seal.
Clean the components.
Lubricate the O-ring seal with clean engine oil.
12. Install a new oil filter element to the oil filter cover.
Lubricate the oil filter element O-ring seal with clean engine oil.
13. Install the oil filter cover and oil filter element.
Tighten the oil filter cover to 35 Nm (26 lb.ft).
14. Fill the engine with the recommended oil to the correct level.

Am I missing something regarding the nipple?

Sorry I can’t remember the details as it’s a few years since I had a 3.6 and my current 4.4 has a different filter. I do recall having to “locate” the nipple before tightening the filter housing

yes, the nipple locates into a hole and there should be a small "0" ring on it. 2007 Vogue TDV8 in Zermatt Silver with Charcoal

I am still going to obtain a new OEM filter from the dealer in the morning and then I'll see where the nipple fits in.

Frustrating when the manufacturer's own service manual doesn't explain the procedure correctly.

Thank you gents for your help.

I obtained a new LR filter from the dealer and then removed the aftermarket filter I had recently fitted.

Sure enough, the bottom of the filter, around the area where the nipple is, was deformed where the nipple had bottomed out on the filter housing and pushed it upwards.

As the engine hadn't been run lately, all the oil had drained from the housing and I could clearly see the hole the nipple was supposed to be in. Anyway, fitted the element correctly this time and all is well again.

I realise now that had I taken more time to look carefully at the nipple on the new element, I would have spotted the 'o'ring on it and this would have made me think about where it was supposed to go. Also, I should have paid more attention to the really good write up by andrewb in the Wikki which I had read not long previously. Oh well.....
