If the mileage is genuine I think the price is actually cheap. Manual is not as desirable thou. Nice colour as well.

A mint 1990 VSE with 50K on the clock has just sold for 24k near me.

The prices seem to vary so much at the moment. Plenty of mint LHD imports available but genuine GB cars in good condition with provable provenance are few and far between. 405 AB exec seats Baltic and Cirrus

The 2.5 VM was rocket science compared to the Diesel engine Land Rover were using in “defenders “ at the time and paved the way for the 200 Tdi ‘s introduced in the Discovery a couple of years later.
Mine was noisy and a bit underpowered, but I loved it.
It was an ex factory LR Approved, 18 months old, car, when I bought it and had over 120,000 almost trouble free miles on the clock when I part x’d it for a 2.5 td P38 eight years later.

When I got mine I was expecting a very slow ride home, I had visions of driving another Dodge 50 like thing.. all smoke and noise with no go.. and was pleasantly shocked by how good it was It left me wondering how it got it's bad reputation in the first place.. Remember it was one of the first small turbo diesels available.. Way better than the 2.25 thing in the Series 3's, and a lot more spritely than most things coming out of Peterborough! Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

Cylinder head gaskets were the “ Achilles Heel “.
Mine blew one at just over 100k miles, but cheap to fix and ran for a couple of years after replacement with no further problems before I sold it.

is that all? heck I can produce a list as long as your arm of cars that suffer with head gasket problems... although the main bulk come from the same manufacturer  Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

I had three VM engines classics from new 1 x 2.4 and 2 x 2.5.

They performed exceptionally well for Diesel engines of that era. The 2.4 held the fastest land speed record for a diesel car of over 120mph from memory over 24hrs. LR stripped a lot of the interior out to achieve this. This was in 1985/1986

It was also a more refined engine than the 300 TDI which replaced it. But the VM's had issues with their cylinder heads as they were 4 and all aluminium - one for each cylinder

LR also ditched the VM as they had to buy them in from Italy - the TDI was their own LR engine.

Out of my 3 vehicles, 1 needed an engine replacing at 70k miles (LR provided the engine and I paid the labour) and another the head gasket went. A lot of the issues were caused by customers fitting the EFI spoiler which interrupted airflow and caused overheating. LR never sold the VM with the spoiler for this reason.

The TDI was noisier, not as quick but more reliable and far more economical. But I preferred the VM engine for its better drivability and performance, which for a 1980's Turbo Diesel was fantastic. The TDI was ok in a Defender but too unrefined for the RR despite the sales blurb.

LR couldn't repeat the Diesel land speed record with the TDI so did an economy drive from lands end to john o'groats on a single tank of fuel - which was well publicised. 2021 L405 Vogue SE 4.4 V8 DIESEL ~ #17

So did I and I got the advice and Reasons not to fit straight from the LR Technical Delartment

I thought well, I am not driving through the Sahara or Africa or Mexico - the temperature will be just fine in GB, plus LR fitted a spoiler to their own 2.4 VM which did the Diesel land speed record !!! I guess engine longevity to them didn't matter 2021 L405 Vogue SE 4.4 V8 DIESEL ~ #17
