I'm new to towing and have a standard class B German license. I'm having trouble understanding exactly how heavy a load I'm allowed to tow with the L322. It seems the car and trailer including load are not allowed to exceed a combined weight of 3500kg with a class B license. This means I can only pull a 800kg trailer and load. Is this right? I've seen L322s towing much larger trailers on the roads in Germany. Have I misunderstood the law or should I assume they have a different class of license? Can I tow more if the trailer has its own brakes?

Not sure on the license laws in Germany, but that’s kind of how it works in the UK now. There is a B license which allows you to tow up to a combined GRoss Train weight of 3500kg. So an empty FFRR weighs in at about 2800kg, the small trailer will weigh the best part of 100kg, which means you could put about 600kg on it (assuming it would take that much).

If you have a BE licence (most folks who passed the test before 1997) then you can tow a heavier trailer up to the plated weights and max GTW of the car and trailer. In the UK with a FFRR and a large trailer this is usually a 3500kg trailer. The licensing doesn’t take into account brakes or no brakes. That is down to the towing weights of the car, maximum Un-braked Weight is usually quite low in any case. Afaik.

Not sure if the licenses are different in Germany but as we all have European licenses it’s possible it’s the same. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Only if you are elder like I am, you can drive 7.5to with the old license "Führerschein Klasse 3". The rules about weights are the plated weight so even if your RR is empty you cannot tow anything without a B+E.
