They’ve just replaced the cam chain 4 weeks ago.

I’m told that this is the one thing to look out for so this has to be a massive plus for purchasing the car. Otherwise I’m told the engines are superb.

sounds great, post pics up when it lands. How much is a chain replacement? Onto my 2nd FFRR, this time an L405 5.0L SC AB in SVO Palette black.

I wouldn't say timing chains are the only thing to look out for - there are plenty of other things that can give you an expensive bill - alternator, water pump, air suspension struts. But the timing chain tensioner failure certainly is a big one so great that it has been done.

Do you know who carried out the work? And did they carry out any other work while they had it apart? It sounds like it was a dealer if they are selling it so soon after tensioner replacements?

Tensioner replacement is quite involved - a decent Indy would probably charge about £2.5k - ouch  Current Cars:

900 for the labour. I’m tontired to break down the parts.
The family run garage have spent £2800 on the car prior to putting it up for sale. It’s a decent outfit with good pedigree

The timing chain/guides certainly seems to be the most common big/expensive issue on the 5.0 S/C as far as I can tell, so definitely a good thing if it's been done already, assuming it's been done correctly and as a preventative measure, before any actual engine damage was done. Is it an LR dealer or well known specialist that's done the work? That job I would want done by someone I really trusted!

Arch - from my looking around into this issue, the parts required seem to come to ~£500, and the LR TSB (http://australiancar.reviews/_pdfs/SB-10056266-1292.pdf) says 9-10 hours labour for the job on an FFRR, so could be quite expensive, depending on labour rate.

Not done by a specialist. It’s a decent family run company which has won numerous local awards and is close to where I live. Been going since the 70s. They said they weren’t happy with the noise so replaced the part along with spark plugs etc.

They sent me a comprehensive report

£2.5k is a lot but better than a smashed up engine. Hopefully I'll be in a position to jump into the FF ownership club later this year on one of these.
