Loud/rough clunking says possibly big end bearings to me. Could it be that the oil pump is dodgy or the delivery channels are blocked starving the shell bearings of oil? May explain why as the engine got to temp it seemed to smooth off. I'd definitely not have driven it though!

Does the oil pump have a non return valve in a diesel? Maybe this has failed? |

Where is the oil coming from? Could be oil leaking past the seals / bearings on the turbo in which case you can expect this to happen

hmm shell bearing..cheap, used to build engines when I was a kid and had loads of experience rebuilding ford essex engines as they needed more bottom end rebuilds that fuel refills and if modern engines are the same you'll need to, at least, get the crank reground for a replacement set of shells.
