4.4TDV8 P040D-00(2F) EGR temp sensor A - Where's the sensor?

Hi there guys,

P040D-00 (2F) Exhaust gas recirculation temperature sensor A

Wanting to do this job. It's one many leave as they have no symptoms but I've just had my DPF taken off and cleaned and want to give it the best chance of survival!

I know there are many discussions / threads about this one, but none have as far as I can find documented the job of changing the sensor.

I have been studying the workshop manual but can't find the location of this sensor.

I thought it would be sensor marked 4 on this diagram, but apparently it's on the other side - the RHS (as you look at the engine with the bonnet open) in the exhaust manifold.

This is from the EGR 'locations' section of the WM.

There are other exhaust temp sensors, but the code says "Exhaust gas recirculation temperature sensor A". EGR you'd think.

Been through the WM several times now, maybe I'm missing it (which is entirely possible!).

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

or would anyone know if there is a TSB ?

Many thanks,
Greg Cheers, Greg

Item 4. It screws into the pipe leading from the EGR valve as the pipe heads towards the front.

Reference Microcat 2012. I changed mine but can't recall the scene.

Greg,
There’s a really clear picture on here somewhere that Nino posted up when his was all stripped down.
Sorry, I am in a rush to get out this morning, but will find it later if Nino doesn’t respond before I get back.

Greg,
I have just seen your PM , having spent much of this very hot day sat around in car parks waiting for she who must be waited for, but I took the opportunity to take a new set of live values.

I have just poured a very large cool beer and am going to get my head into the WM before I reply to your PM.

Greg,
It doesn’t help that they keep changing direction of pictures in WM, but in this picture it definitely says No. 5 EGR temp. Sensor.

Yes - thanks Mike. And in the picture I posted it's No.4 and the same sensor in the pic you posted it's No. 5 .
I just can't see anything on the RH Exhaust side related to EGR.

Under the ENGINE CONTROLS section, there are two exhaust temp sensors.

Interestingly, I have these live values:

Notice the Exhaust Gas Temp - Bank 2 - Sensor 1 shows 100deg - it's always on 100 and most certainly duff. It doesn't match the error code (Says EG not EGR).

Part of me thinks this is the one that's causing the error and not the one marked 4 (or 5).

I guess a TSB or someone who knows could shed light.

Cheers, appreciate you help.

Greg

. Cheers, Greg

Greg,
I have just read through a list of TSB’s that I download off Topix when I was getting sections of the WM.
Sorry, I can’t find any reference to this fault on there.

I will take some more live readings tomorrow, particularly the exhaust Gas Temp bank 2 , to see if mine is also showing 100c.
I will make a note of any that appear duff., and assume the ones that give a reading are working OK.

Ah thank you Mike for checking the TSB's! Shame nothing there...

I looked at your live values but I saw you only had 2 of the 4 exhaust temp reading showing but yes it would be interesting to see what yours is reading, especially as, if I remember correctly, you also have the P040D-00(2F) fault code.
. Cheers, Greg

Greg,
I have had these two Fault codes showing since July 2017.
I have tried to clear them many times but without any success.

I will record all the live values that I think are related tomorrow.
Mike.

PS
I have decided that I will only start changing sensors if I have to strip it down for any reason eg oil leak etc. G reg 2.5VM Vogue Portofino red 1991- 1999

Hi again guys,

I've been through not only the workshop manual but now also microcat diagrams and can only find the one EGR sensor marked 4 at the top of this thread. It's the same one that's marked 5 on the diagram Mike posted and also from Nino's picture. You'd think this is the sensor causing the P040D-00(2F) error but I've had knowledgeable advice that the sensor marked 4 & 5 in the diagrams is not the one causing the P040D-00(2F) error.

Apparently, the offending sensor is on the RHS (as you look at the engine with the bonnet open) exhaust manifold. That's a different location to the sensor marked 4 & 5.

To kinda shed a little light on this theory, the readings I'm getting on Exhaust Gas Temp - Bank 2 - Sensor 1 tell me that this sensor has failed as it shows 100deg constantly. See my post with a IIDTool screen grab a few posts up. Notice in the screen grab it's called "Exhaust Gas Temp", not "EGR Temp Sensor" which the error code states.

I've love to know where these four Exhaust Gas Temp sensors are located, especially Bank 2 - Sensor 1.

The error code also says P040D-00(2F) EGR temp sensor A - the 'A' indicates there may be more than one.

Definitely confused.com

It might be that I have two duff sensors, two separate issues. I'm a bit stuck on this, any help most welcome!

Thanks,
Greg Cheers, Greg

Two sensors are located in the right exhaust pipe on Euro5 engines. The top one close to the manifold is labelled as an oxygen sensor and the lower one close to the cat is just labelled a sensor WDN500130 in 2012 Microcat but google shows as an EGT sensor.

Another EGT sensor LR022893 (now LR052169) is located in the left manifold, probably the one you referred to as being in the right manifold when looking at the engine.

Another EGT sensor LR022894 is located in the exhaust behind the DPF.

Perhaps disconnect 1 sensor at a time, checking which one doesn't trigger a new fault.

Graeme, you're a gent! That's extremely helpful!

I'll get under the bonnet and get a start unplugging them as a basic way of identification, great idea.

Since it says Bank 2 - Sensor 1 my money's on what I'd think'd be the first one off the engine. The one you are saying is labelled as an oxygen sensor.

Where are you viewing Microcat?

Thanks, Greg
. Cheers, Greg
