I would not expect the oxygen sensor to be referred to as exhaust gas temperature. If you knew which bank was bank1 then you could go straight to either the one in the left manifold or to the right one's just before the cat. If bank2 is the right bank then sensor2 could be the EGT sensor behind the dpf.

I have a copy of Microcat 2012 version.

Cheers Mike, yes I'm on that one, just wondering if Graeme was using a different one.
Couldn't see the PNs correlating to the ones Graeme was quoting. Cheers, Greg

Mine is a copy of the CD issued at the time which also has the part numbers rather than just a diagram reference.

Graeme it's Bank 2 - Sensor 1

I was also told it's near the manifold RHS of the engine (when standing in front)

Will have another look at the Microcat diagrams. Might be the one you called out as LR022893.

Cheers,

This one (highlighted in yellow) looks like it's going into the manifold. It's marked as Exhaust Gas Temperature

Greg,
Salter121 is doing an engine swap at the moment.
It might be worth you sending him a PM asking him to take some photos whilst his is all in bits?

Thanks Mike, well I did browse through his photos.

So just wanted to summarise what I know/think so far:

This is a common fault on the 4.4TDV8.

An R instead of a T - a typo is possibly causing a whole lot of people a whole lot of trouble....

The problem is the code readers wrongly (according to my theory) call the sensor EGR 4.4TDV8 P040D-00(2F) EGR temp sensor A.

In fact it is an EGT sensor, the on the NS exhaust manifold. I found a post going back ages from Craig CTC who said this:

Quote:
The P040D-00 (28 ) Unknown fault... I had this come up on mine and it was the temp probe in the NS manifold P040D-00 (2F) Unknown. Linked to the EGR (i think) it made the car stink whilst engine was warming up and poor fuel consumption...

This location is clearly not the EGR sensor (which is on top of the intake system, see Page 1 of this thread) - and explains why some people have have their EGR sensor replaced and the fault return, e.g.:

Quote:
I have had my Westminster for two weeks and when I put my IID on it flagged up the code P004D-(2F). So booked it in and a new sensor fitted under LRA warranty. Just got home and guess what, it's back.

I think this has led dealers to wrongly write off this, having replaced the EGR sensor, as a ghost code. It may be all linked to the EGR system as Craig suggests but my personal theory it it's a typo.

The EGT (Exhaust Gas Temperature) sensor in the manifold is this one:

Part: LR052169 (previously LR022893) Sensor - Exhaust Gas - Temperature
and it seems you need this tool too:
JLR-303-1573 Remover, Exhaust Manifold Temperature Sensor

The workshop manual even has a chapter explaining the replacement procedure called
exhaust manifold temperature sensor.pdf
(not sure if I can upload a PDF?)

My EGT readings confirm the whole theory.
They show this one as constantly on 100 degrees:

Further confirmation is the stinky smell when idling cold and also my DPF is filling up. Both of these Craig has mentioned as symptoms.

Ok brass tacks - access doesn't look easy (see Mike's pic a few posts up) BUT actually I've had a really good nose in the engine bay today and I can actually see the sensor. Just. It's near the battery and straight down. To get to it I'll need to remove the cabin filter plenum box and the battery surround and a few other bits.

That's the detective work so far. This weekend, as GraemeS suggested, I'll remove the plenum and some other bits so I can unplug the sensor to check that is in fact the dud one reading 100degrees. And I'll order a the tool and a sensor .

Stay tuned, hopefully I'll be able to tackle this the following weekend when I've got the part.

.
. Cheers, Greg

@GraemeS - be good to know your thoughts - In the same thread as Craig's comment, I read that you had the same error code in 2016 and changed your EGR sensor. Be good to know if that did - or didn't clear the P040D(2F) .. You also correctly called the sensor part number ^^^. Thumbs Up

Also BTW guys thanks for pointing me to the Russian Microcat which has the part numbers, am now using and it is GREAT!

. Cheers, Greg

Mine's EGR temp sensor fault indeed returned very soon after the EGR temp sensor was replaced.

I too had a look at mine's EGT sensor last night and spotted the wire running back to a connector which I thought should be accessible after removing the cabin air intake assembly.

I would certainly like to have all EGT sensors operational. I haven't checked what the IIDtool shows but might do that today.

ok interesting. So do you show the P040D-00(2F) fault now?
Be great to see if you have a 100degree reading on the Bank 2 - Sensor 1 EGT

Has anyone else out there got a 100 degree reading on EGT Bank 2 - Sensor 1, together with the P040D-00(2F) error?
. Cheers, Greg
