Hi all,

I have read a number of posts, some saying to use caliper paint, some saying to use Hammerite smooth (even though this isn't high heat), all giving one reason or another on which to use.

I want a smooth (as it can be) grey or black that can be done with a brush, don't want to disconnect the caliper fully, or mask off lots of area.

Has anyone used Hammerite smooth and how has it been over time, or would you recommend true caliper paint?

I used it on front & rear calipers 6 or 7 months ago - on ours front are 4 pot alloy Brembo & rear cast iron TRW.
Managed to get a reasonably smooth finish with a brush - certainly good enough for behind a wheel. I used black & did clean the calipers with brake cleaner solvent after rubbing down with medium roughish gritpaper
Doesn't seem to have deteriorated at all so far - but no alpine descents towing a caravan yet ( or planned - lol).
In normal use, the calipers don't get that hot & if the paint does deteriorate, it's cheap & fast to re-do.

Using it on the front disc bells might not be so positive, but I've used hand painted heat resistant silver there with reasonable results so far. Paul,

We do have a caravan, but just driving with forward thought and gear braking does the trick.

The discs are already coated but they will be getting a blast of silver (already have it from doing the old ones (bell section only) but will give the Hammerite black (grey if i can find it) a go.

One more thing, did you give the calipers a single or multi coat, and if so, how long to dry before you did the next coat?

I gave the front calipers 2 coats. It was so hot when I did the first coat, I couldn't get it to dry smoothly the first time or without thin patches.
The 2nd coat went on a few days later when the ambient temp was more reasonable.
The rears only got 1 coat - although I had used kurust on them a few days previously to neutralise any remaining rust & create a black undercoat .
All done with no masking or disconnection - quick & effective - lol

From past experience if a 2nd coat is required, I've always waited a few hours min. Any less & the 2nd coat appears to pull the 1st off - not ideal ! Paul,

Don't think its the colour for me, but look well done. Just need the weather now. Then its fix noise/fit disc and pads with nice finish of paint

Reviving an old thread! I'm thinking of refurbishing my calipers as they seem to be in a pretty poor (aesthetic) state from repeated corrosive wheel cleaner use.

Is anyone able to point me to a write-up as to how to go about doing this without removing the calipers? From this thread I gather:

1. Medium grit rub down (80-120?)


2. Clean down with brake cleaner solvent

3. Metal paint - 2 coats with a few hrs dry time between coats
I see some using high temp paint and others going for standard Hammerite smooth. Has anyone seen one being better than the other in terms of longevity? And would a 250ml tin be sufficient for 4 calipers or should I be getting more? I'm not familiar with it's consistency.

Mine are the yellow ones in this thread, done with hammerite 2 years and 40k ago, mine got wire wheeled to get to loose stuff off then brake cleaner before painting.

And they still come up looking good even now, and I'm not one for cleaning  Remember:- amateurs built the ark
