Ran reds on my old vRS, my Disco 3, and just bought a set to fit to the 6 pots on the D3

Great pads, huge reduction in dust, work well enough from cold, and never had them fade

In fact, the rear brakes give off more dust than a reds on the front

I've just installed my second set of Jurid pads and I'm very happy with them - especially after CTC revealed that it is factory fit. Very Happy

Even better news is that they are available for £122 including delivery and a set of Delphi rear pads.

Unfortunately BB, theyre not available from GSF for the L405 (TRW caliper version). GSF also told me they won't be selling Jurid anymore, they're now selling another premium make Thumbs Up

Dan @ Duckworth has quoted me £128 for a front pair of LR pads which is good. Just thinking about trying ceramic...

Thumbs Up

‘Brembo’ pads being sold as such again by ECP and seemingly compatible with TRW calipers. The displayed price is before the 53% discount methinks. Not inclined to put ‘Brembo’ on the L405. Tried them on the 4.2SC and they emmitted brake squeal.

I bought some Brembo boxed pads and swapped them out for originals after a week they were crap - I have always just used genuine as cant see the point in trying to save a few quid on a pretty important item but thats just me

An old thread I know, but I’m blaming Craig for sending me over here tonight Laughing

As something of an industrial insider with 35yrs in the brakes & friction business (non-automotive, but the same perversions exist), alas much of what you read is true: brake mfrs do not make friction & friction mfrs do not make brakes. (rash generalisation alert! Laughing
Regards friction material, much of it is “smoke and mirrors” -exactly what goes into friction products is a closely-guarded secret, and not always for the right reasons: ash, resin, carbon, iron, copper, graphite, silica, and various other minerals and metals. Asbestos is still uncontrolled in some countries (usual suspects apply).
The real secret is being able to guarantee a consistent “mix” in a highly-variable global supply chain, something only the very few Western specialists can do, e.g Federal-Mogul, Jurid, Miba, etc.
Then there is a huge “aftermarket” presence with more variable, less consistent product, and some of these manufacturers are typically in Asia and DO manufacture for automotive/brake OEMs who are increasingly profit-focused, so even if you buy “Genuine” this or that, you can’t guarantee the product will be the same as when you bought it last, the vehicle mfr may have switched to a Tier-2 or Tier-3 supplier because of supply issues, or the friction supplier may have “economised” on the product, especially in the past 2 years because of Covid issues.
It’s literally a minefield out there in terms of supply alone, and this is further compounded by a huge amount of BS in marketing, and of course by internet armchair “experts” so you have to see what works for you, and this is the value of honest forums like this, where there is a genuine desire to help others of a common interest, and no sales pitch or profit motivation.
Materials-wise, friction falls into 2 basic camps (ignoring carbon-carbon, which is too exotic for mainstream road cars) “Organic” paper/wood/ash & resin with or without metal inclusions (most common), and “Ceramic” or sinter-ceramic, which is made from ceramic and copper powders fused with graphite as a lubricant at high temperature and pressure.
Organic friction is most suited to road cars, having a very stable CoF (coefficient of friction) across a wide range of speeds, and sacrificial to opposing substrate (disc) however having a limited thermal capacity, mainly due to the resin bonder which is permanently modified by temperatures over approx. 300C. (Glazing). Sinter-Ceramic friction has a very stable CoF at high speed and can recover from temperatures as high as 850C, however often has reduced CoF at slow speeds, and although very hard wearing 4x-6x vs Organic) can be aggressive to the opposing substrate, (grooving) therefore better suited to the track where such items as discs are considered as disposable.

Just my 2p, hope it wasn’t too boring……. Yawn
I may have inadvertently just found the cure for insomnia! Shocked Laughing “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

Some great info there Gremlin, thank you. I use ceramic/carbon fibre composite pads. The braking performance is amazing (even from cold) and they keep my wheels nice and clean compared to semi-metallic pads.

If my discs wear quicker as a result, it doesn't bother me and I'll just replace as necessary.

Again. Thanks for the info, some interesting reading Thumbs Up Kev

Aaaaarrrrgh! Why do respectable vendors, such as Advanced Factors, sell Brembo branded discs and pads if they are deemed, in the opinion of some learned members, to be of an inferior quality? I had a full set of Brembo branded discs and pads several years ago and having done 30,000 miles + with them, have had no issues. Previous cars:
S-Max 2007-2013 (only diesel I've had, good car but expensive when diesely bits go wrong, so what's the point?)
Galaxy 2001-2007
Mondeo Estate 1997-2001
Sierra Estate 1993-1997
Uno Turbo 1987 -1993
Fiesta 1984 - 1987
Fiat 127 1982 - 1984
