3.6 TDV8 how common is turbo failure

I'm looking at one at the moment, how common is turbo failure on the 3.6?, and how much are you looking at for new ones these days?, the car I'm looking at has done 100k with full main dealer and specialist history done every year, seems to drive fine.

I don’t think there’s a specific problem with them failing but you need to bear in mind most turbos will let go at 100K-150K

@100K miles on the one your looking at they could go tomorrow or in another 100K Miles it’s luck of the drawer and how you drive / how often the oil is changed and if it’s allowed to cool down after a run

Now to the big question cost

Take a seat

For both turbos ideally you’d want new genuine LR ones I’m led to believe but could be wrong
Some people have done them with the engine in and some say engine out

But as a minimum you’d be looking at £2500-£3000 onto no6 Range Rover

I know it's the single system, not the twin turbos on the 3.6, but the turbo on my D3 was still the original when the engine let go at 250k.

Turbos are generally expected to last the life of the motor. My 3.6 has 281,000km, and the motor runs beautifully.

Here’s some info I posted recently about the 3.6 which sums up my knowledge, and might be of some use.

The 3.6 motor:
- developed and built by Ford with PSA, as a possible power plant for the F150. Released just before the GFC. Technically known as the Lion DT17.
- intercooler hoses, intake manifold cracks/holes, turbo and EGR failure seem to be the main failure points.
- OEM intercooler hoses seem to fail after a few years and are really a consumable. I have changed to silicone hoses (thanks Roverlord Offroad spares)
- intake manifold failure seems to be a fatigue issue, not very common so hard to know.
- Turbo compressor fans going out of balance, hitting housing and sending bits into the motor (cause possible build up of junk on fins, or wear combined with oil starvation from oil feed partial blockage).
- EGR failure ie the valve face cracking and dropping bits into the motor or staying partially open and dropping in excessive exhaust into the motor, another is EGR coolant failure resulting in coolant being fed into the motor.
- excess oil vapour being fed into the motor due to CCV filter being under spec. Not sure about this.

That seems to be mostly it. These motors were originally advised to have 10 or 11k service intervals. That was doubled at some stage. My car has always had services around 10k km. I think that’s important.

Other things. I have done the following to help ensure appropriate engine life:
- disable the EGRs. This stops exhaust particulates combining with oil vapour to coat and gunk up the motor. (Not unique to this motor - see problems in Toyota/MMC diesels). This makes the motor run smoother and quieter (not that it’s noisy).
- use induction cleaner - not so important now the EGRs are disabled. This also helped my motor - more power, smoother.
- use engine oil flush. This helps keep oil feeds clear. I just used some Cost Effective Maintenance product. This has helped keep the oil cleaner.
- fuel additive. Not sure if it’s had an effect. I have tried a few different ones. I think it’s helped.

Overall I think this is an excellent motor. However, everyone says the 4.4 is better. ______________________________

Thank you all.
Rar110, really appreciate you taking the time to make such a helpful, informative post thanks a lot Thumbs Up .

I’m pretty familiar with how to look after a V8 with twin turbos as I’ve got one at the moment, always let the car idle for a good 30 seconds when I’ve finished a journey, more if the car has recently been on boost, and NEVER do any hard driving until both engine and oil up to temperature.
Hoping to move to a TDV8 to save some money on fuel- I can’t live with 12-14 MPG on super unleaded now my commute has gotten a lot further!.
I’m still thinking of stretching the budget and going for a 4.4 but thinking a late 3.6 will be the better way to go.

3.6 is a good motor, and they can go on for miles without the turbos letting go, or they can go bang at 100k.

To be honest there is not much in terms of warning that they are going to fail, that said there are stories of them failing on here, and elsewhere on the web, but there will be ones running around with 150k plus on their original blowers with no trouble at all. The problem is as with all used motors, you have no firm idea of the previous maintenance that has been carried out, if it has been done properly, has much extra preventative stuff been done etc.

Buy the best car you can, with the most history. and swap the turbo hoses and fluids asap. Buy one which has been serviced annually as a minimum, with the lowest milage between services possible.

20000 miles per year and serviced annually is not great,
10000 miles a year and only serviced one every 2 years is not great either

ideally 10000 miles a year or less and serviced every year. Thumbs Up
20000 miles a year and serviced twice a year Thumbs Up

the 4.4 is though a better motor! Thumbs Up There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Mine was on 168k on orginial turbos and was running fine when I sold it 6 months ago

Maintenance is more important than age. Ed

Mine now has 145k miles on the original turbos and sounds and feels like new..

I suspect the biggies for the turbos are frequent oil changes / engine flushes and allowing the turbos to cool down after a run.

A Turbo will last the life of an engine if looked after, allowed to spoil down, idle before shut off and regular oil changes - tell tale signs are blowing oil.

If you are unsure just change the Turbo/s, I have done this with a 7.5l New Holland Tractor as routine maintenance - Turbo’s are cheap, if you have any doubts rather than wreck an engine just ditch the Turbo and sell it SH on eBay and replace with new. 2021 L405 Vogue SE 4.4 V8 DIESEL ~ #17

Turbos are definitely cheaper than an engine for sure, not a cheap job to replace for the sake of it tho. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Think I’m going to hold off a couple more months and go for a 4.4 instead, from what I’ve seen they’ve got much less chance of going pop on them, and the 8 speed gearbox seems to be less troublesome too.

I had a small loan to skip the 3.6 and get the 4.4.....

Don’t need the worry..... price difference def less than cost of engine replacement.
