L405 tailgate height when open

I'm hoping that this issue might have been experienced by someone here that can help me to understand what is happening.

I had the vehicle for over a year before I noticed an issue, when I bashed the top of my head on the sharp corner of the tailgate. I then found that I could manually lift the tailgate about 3 or 4 inches higher which would give me ample clearance for my bonce (5' 10"). I went through the height reset mode but it made no difference. The dealer and I compared this with a similar vehicle, also in access mode, and confirmed that this was not correct. New tailgate struts were fitted under warranty, this made no difference. I took the car back and they said that yes, this was still not right so they fitted the next set of tailgate struts and this also made no difference. The car is now booked into their bodyshop for diagnosis with the tailgate hinges being suspected. The car is immaculate, has never been off-road or mishandled and I am baffled.

Any ideas?

It's got to be something to do with the variable height which you can set I would have thought.

Not had any experience of setting the height though, but I know it can be done on my MY18 car. All LR cars from 1984

I have Stan and Chalky, that's what I was meaning by the: "I went through the height reset mode but it made no difference." I was quite excited when I read that in the manual but it made almost no difference. You lift the tailgate fully up, hold it there whilst you press the open/close button until it beeps, let go and the Censored drops again.

A hard-hat is one solution but there must be a technical answer to this.

I’m 6’2” and can re-confirm those corners are sharp.... & hurt!!!! a piece of triangular rubber would be ideal, if anyone has any ideas, I’ll buy a pair... Filters are in fact so good that in certain circumstances, when the ambient air is already polluted, a diesel car will tend to extract more particles from the air than it emits. Emissions Analytics worked with........etc etc

He who dies with the most toys wins...

probably of no help - but mine never opens to full height either - always an inch or 2 short. I've just put it down to manufacturing tolerances Shocked

Could someone else please check this and tell me if, with the tailgate fully open, they are able to lift it a further few 2 or 3 inches and when the vehicle is in access mode can a 5' 10" person stand under the corner without whacking their head.

I'd really appreciate if anyone reading this could quickly check this so that I know if I should be chasing this issue.

Be careful - it is very, very sharp. I saw a very nasty injury happen:

I have twice caught my head on the sharp corner of the upper tailgate.

Once was when I had it on the lowest suspension setting and walked round with eyes down looking for something in the boot. The second time, my daughter had pressed the electric close button and I was in the wrong place, looking the wrong way.

I'm 6'0". Taller would be more vulnerable.

Then I was shooting at the weekend. Another of the guns (not me) was bending to get something out of the boot of another L405. The owner (not me) had pressed the close button. Result was a collision of head with the sharp corner.

Cue a 3 inch gash and lots (and lot and lots) of blood. One of the chaps was a surgeon. The shoot had some sterile veterinary staples (dogs, for the use of). The gun was unwilling to go to A&E and miss his shooting so this was the outcome:

As for how to get it to open to its full extent, if the reset isn't working, I'm at a loss.
