TDV8 3.6 longevity

Hi gentlemen, this is my first post, although I have been a member for a few months. I currently own a 1995 RR Classic SE, this is my 3rd RRC so I am not new to Rangies. I am looking to buy a TDV8 3.6 for towing and touring. As I live in Australia and the distances can be extreme, I need a diesel for this task. I have asked this question on another LR forum, which I received some very good information, but I would appreciate your thoughts.
What sort of kilometers, or miles, should one expect to get out of the 3.6 engine, giving that regular services etc are carried out. Most of the cars in my price range seem to have about 150k and above kilometers. What are your thoughts? Would I expect trans problems, turbo problems, suspension problems etc. Being a Range Rover I would never expect any electrical glitches....... Whistle
Cheers and thanks,
Phil

Gday Phil
I probably can’t add much more than I mentioned previously. However, motorwise the UK 3.6s are a bit different from Australian delivered cars as I believe the UK version all have a DPF. ______________________________

Most if not all UK 3.6s don't have a DPF fitted. That came in with the 4.4 engine AFAIK.

Longevity wise the big issue seems to be the risk of turbo failure possibly as a result of EGR break up this a lot of people opt to blank the EGRs. 2016 Skoda Octavia VRS Estate

thanks guys, as I have said, the cars that I am looking at are getting close to 200k. Engine wise, that shouldn't be a problem except for known issues, but is life expectancy more than 300k, more than 500k. looked after and serviced what km would one expect from the engine.... I have had 500k from my old 3.9 V8 ( previous Rangie). I wouldn't like to buy a mid 200k car and know that I would need an engine change at 300k. has anyone had experience with a high mileage TDV8. RAR110 thanks for all you information here and elsewhere.
Cheers
Phil.

Keep them serviced well, don't skimp on that, always let them cool down for a few minutes after a run too, I'm sure some of the more mechanically minded will be along shortly... Thumbs Up

Gday Phil
As I’ve indicated my tdv8 has over 280k km now. Original turbos. I think with the right treatment these motors should last 4-500k km. So should the turbos. My motor’s very smooth. But I take a keen interest in simple preventative mantenance options. Whether that’s effective is yet to be determined.

Anything with around 200,000km will possibly need a trans/transfer case rebuild or replacement sometime in the near future. Alternatively you could get 350,000km out of one. I know of a early D3 (same trans setup) with those sort of km, never had a trans service, and runs great.

I’d also consider a facelift L322 with a SC/NA Jag motor (not BMW 4.4). These go quite cheap in Oz, as diesel is still popular.

I love the enormous torque of the 3.6, but can see the appeal of the Jag v8. Not that many around, but they come up occasionally and are well priced. You could even consider a sport with a 4.4. One recently sold for about $12k. While not as good as the L322, still a lot of car for the money. ______________________________
