AJ V8 engine production

According to the reports in the press in recent days relating to Ford's UK job losses, production of JLR's AJ V8 engine will cease at the end of this year.

Unless they are running up a large stockpile of engines (unlikely) surely they must have an alternative lined up. The rumours of using BMW's V8 that did the rounds a couple of years ago have gone quiet so I done know if this is still a possibility or not.

I don't believe that they will stop producing V8 models in the short term as this would put them at a huge marketing disadvantage relative to the competition.

Therefore I can only think that it can't be long before we see JLR testing models with a new V8 from new supplier.

The reason for my interest is that I am about to buy a new SVA dynamic and I am undecided between waiting for a new potentially better engine for MY20 but at the risk of the new engine not being as good as the existing V8 SC which I like.

As the lead time on SVA dynamics is long, there may not be much time before there is no longer a choice.

Anyone heard anything on the grapevine regarding new engines?

Having built a big engine factory at Castle Bromwich and developed the Ingenium product which is designed to work in different configurations, I would expect JLR to create a V8 from two 2-litre Ingenium 4cyl engines, possibly with cylinder deactivation and two turbos. 4-litre is a meaningful limit for tax purposes in China, which again points in that direction.

When I was last at the dealer's, one of the technicians mentioned that JLR was testing engines made from Ingenium blocks, apparently achieving lots of power, this to be dialled back a bit for everyday use. There had been no official word from JLR. Only Range Rovers since 1988

If the plan is for them to make their own V8 I think I'd better hurry and get one of the existing ones. I don't really want to be a part of JLR's "customer test team" for a new engine Laughing

There’s supposed to have been a straight six Ingenium coming for a while - the BMW V8 will presumably be the next generation twin turbo.

The engine factory is at Wolverhampton, next to the M54. Castle Bromwich is actually vulnerable for closure

If you like the current V8, then why wait for the first of an unproven engine, with dealer’s service technicians at the very start of their learning curves?

If I knew for sure it was going to be a BMW unit I would definitely wait. If it's an in house job then I would be rushing to get the last of the AJV8s.

If they could do a deal with BMW to throw in their iDrive along with their V8 then we would really be talking Cool

Ive been driving a 400e for the last week and crikey! Waft doesn't quite cut it... Extra wafty is what it is... Pulls away on battery power even when battery says 0 capacity left and the inginium engine starts at around 15-20mph so you never really get to hear the engine... VERY impressed with it Thumbs Up

Long may they develop such a cracking power plant... Bow down

mmmm. Interesting.

Few months ago, a Master Tech at my local dealership told me he heard LR Technical where now starting to receive a high number of reports that cylinder walls were cracking in their Ingenium engines - presumably of higher mileage ones or maybe just a faulty batch I dunno. Doesn't bode well if they are trying to "up" the power output. He thought LR were in quite a panic about it.

Could cracking cylinder walls be a result be caused by contaminated engine oil coupled with the oil dilution issues JLRP00100 refers that many have suffered?

paul Journey started in a LR2B at 16 and has incl. just about every Land Rover, Disco, RRS and Range Rover Vehicle owned or driven, I even worked for the company when it was owned by BAe - It must be a madness!!! because to add to my 4.4 TDV8 Westminister In Baltic Blue I bought a second L322 as a commuter bus, TD6 2004 Vogue in Oslo Blue with cream leather now both gone replaced with what could turn out to be my biggest mistake. Interested to see that in this week's announcement of the facelifted F-Type, the 5.0 V8 petrol engine seems to have been given a continued lease of life.

I'm guessing that this is the legacy JLR/Ford unit rather than the rumoured BMW equivalent.

Just posting here in case there is a FFRR carryover. 2016 SDV8 AB

My understanding is production of the AJ-V8 is moving to Wolverhampton (from Bridgend) next year.
