Rear diff not happy

Rear diff is whining a bit so put car on lift and seal has gone to offside drive shaft
Oil is black and was only changed 10k ago this is due ,apparently to a coating that landrover put on the inside of the diffs it breaks down mixes with the oil and coats everything which causes the problem so
Rebuild diff 2 grand or buy a used with a 3 month warranty for 350 quid delivered so think I will try this first
Will let you know how it goes
Diff has done 180k so not bad

Please do update - I have a feeling mine is going in a similar direction...

I assume you have the locking diff?

Yes correct the locking diff
I didn't realise that they had painted the inside of the diff to stop corrosion
Will let you know what happens as I will strip the old diff

Just a word of warning gents... The petrol diffs seam to suffer with water ingress and this then causes rust on both the diff internals and the driveshaft ends! The rust creeps along the driveshaft, then the seal fails and the fluid leaks out...

So, its not just the diff that needs replacing but also one or both of the driveshafts... Rolling Eyes

Excellent, thanks - looking forward to seeing your progress and just how difficult it is!

Where did you find the replacement diff - I've been watching ebay like a hawk but haven't had much luck. I believe the correct part number is LR009627 for reman (and the original part number is TVK500331).

Right so took the diff off and the bearing on the offside shaft was knackered and the casing had broken down hence the squealing - I had a quote of 2k plus vat to rebuild it but bought a 2nd hand one for 250 quid plus vat from a breaker I have used in the past for Classic bits. It cam out of a 2008 with 70k on the clock and the manufactured date supported this so new seals from Dan at Duckworth and fitted and drives like new again. Interestingly there used to be a bit of schlep when power was taken off and put back that has gone as well. The oil in the bad diff was black and it had been changed less than 10k miles ago so all in all a good result - took me about 6 hrs to do.Hardest bit was getting the hub off the drive shaft

Nicely done! Were there any particular problems outsides of the hubs? Did you need to remove the exhaust? If you;ve got a basic step-by-step that would be great Thumbs Up
