New engine at 40k. How does that affect service intervals?

In process of having a new engine in my SDV8 Autobiography at 41k miles. It’s under warranty fortunately.

Vehicle is 2 years old. Last service at 33k. How will that affect my service intervals and how will I ensure I don’t get an expensive service in the future before it is due??

All thoughts welcome! Current: L405 SVAutobiography Dynamic 2018, Defender D240 HSE 2020, Defender 110 Adventure 2015, Defender 90 XS 2012, Lightweight Ser III 1975

I don't think it changes things much - you'd need to look at what is done at each service.

Things like brake fluid, pollen filters etc all stay on the original schedule

Same happened to me summer last year. When I asked the dealer the same question they said you stick to the same schedule ...which I guess is understandable. Though I will question any belts as I would like to think they didn't just put the old ones on the new engine.

Incase you are not already aware, when they fit a "new" engine - you are only getting a new block, cylinder heads and cams. All the ancillary equipment (manifolds/pumps/ alternators / starter motor etc etc) are taken off the old engine and put onto the new.

Just collected my vehicle. Dealer advice was:
- stick to existing service schedule
- they will take into account major items based on new engine at 41k
- you will need to update DVLA with new engine number...

As an “aside”... after less than 5 miles of driving with the new engine, there was a very loud bang. Like a big back fire. It was followed by loss of power and a red triangle engine management warning sign. I pulled over. The service engineer, to his credit, came out with the loan vehicle I had just returned.

The technician was very apologetic, said it should have been thoroughly tested, and thought it was a turbo hose that has come off.

Anyway. Back in the loan car for a fifth week...

Since I bought my vehicle, I have driven 70,000 miles, in 3 years and 1 month. 29,000 of which have been in loan bevehicles. Possibly some sort of record!! Current: L405 SVAutobiography Dynamic 2018, Defender D240 HSE 2020, Defender 110 Adventure 2015, Defender 90 XS 2012, Lightweight Ser III 1975

Just picked up my RR. All fixed.

Cost of new engine and turbos ... £17,300. Fortunately under warranty. Together with 5 weeks Thrifty rental of RR Spirt Autobiography... and 250 mile taxi ride. Think I am definitely extending my warranty in Nov. Current: L405 SVAutobiography Dynamic 2018, Defender D240 HSE 2020, Defender 110 Adventure 2015, Defender 90 XS 2012, Lightweight Ser III 1975

What was it that originally failed on the SDV8?

I believe it was the turbocharger that failed. Fragments of metal then found in engine requiring whole new engine, turbocharger, intercooler and air intake.

Had sudden loss of power on motorway at cruising speed, whining noise and juddering of whole engine. Was quite alarming. Accompanied by red engine warning light.

Fault code was P0299-77 but don’t know what that is. Current: L405 SVAutobiography Dynamic 2018, Defender D240 HSE 2020, Defender 110 Adventure 2015, Defender 90 XS 2012, Lightweight Ser III 1975

Thank goodness they didn’t see the failure as ‘wear and tear’!

I would stick to original servicing schedule, a lot of it relates to non-engine parts anyway.
