I can't answer your second question about the air cylinder, but we updated from a 2002 4.4 to a 2007 4.2 SC and do not see any difference driving the same routes we drove in the 4.4 in the same style (i.e. not booting it).

Driving the same sort of routes in the same way...I found the 4.2 about 1 mpg better than the 4.4 and the 5.0 is about 1 mpg better than the 4.2. Given the significant increases in power between engines that's a bit counter-intuitive but it is real. The issue is you only achieve that by not indulging your right foot too often... Mike - MPx
