Steering won’t lock

I recently had the “key won’t turn” issue and replaced the doughnut magnet in the steering column lock switch.

Although the magnet wasn’t broken, this fixed the issue.

However, after a couple of weeks of normal operation I’m now experiencing something a bit odd. When I insert the key in the ignition, there is no longer any “steering unlocking” noises, but I can still start her up as normal.

I don’t know whether to be nervous or not 😀

Does anyone have an idea of what’s happening?

I did recently change the battery in my key fob, but I can’t see that being related (the battery needed de soldering, so maybe I’ve overheated a chip or something) 2007 3.6 TDV8

Are you getting any steering lock clicks when you switch the engine off and remove the key? No? Can you then still turn the steering wheel at all? Yes ? If so it sounds like the steering lock has stuck in the disengaged position and therefore not completing the locking immobilisation sequence. If you can read the codes this should show up as a steering lock failure. At least your still mobile at present - its worse if the lock fails closed as you wont be able to start or move the car but worth getting the codes checked as a first step.

Bit drastic. I think you can get to the mechanism with the column in place. Have a look at this which may help
