Does anyone tow a caravan with the farmers hitch?

If so, what holes are you fixing the tow ball to?

I had mine on the top set and it freaked badly all the way to Wales and back. When I got to site I removed the hitch pads and they were glazed over. I cleaned them with some sandpaper but it still creaked on the way home.
When I offered it up against the detachable one, it was too high. I’ve since bolted the tow ball onto the middle set of holes and it’s now the same height as the detachable one.

I’m not sure whether this will stop the creaking noise. Will find out this Friday when we tow again. [/u] 2010 MY Vogue SE TDV8 3.6 Stornoway Grey- fully loaded

Does the caravan have a recommended ball height ?

I used to use the lowest ones with my Ifor Williams

Middle set of holes.

However I actually cut off the bottom set of holes to give more ground clearance, so arguably its now the bottom set of holes!!!
More importantly looks much better too.

What do you think of my alternative for trailer towing. I have been using a tow bar carrying rack for decades.
The RR 2 inch box hitch makes it easy to fabricate, and fit and remove. This one is aluminium and folds up into nothing.

Does get the odd look down a motorway, but is legal.

Best wishes
Glen

I did. Still creaked like a haunted house door on the way back. Fine in a straight line but as soon as I turn left or right there it is. 2010 MY Vogue SE TDV8 3.6 Stornoway Grey- fully loaded

Middle here.

Our issue was with the small amount of play between the two, causes a 'knock' which was solved with a Anti-Rattle Stabiliser Thumbs Up

I used to use the farmers hitch to tow my plastic palace, I used the middle set of holes, there is a legislation for tow bar and trailer heights.

Hope this helps.. Thumbs Up Current: TDV8 (3.6) RRS HSE
