I am getting close to changing my car again and it will probably be another petrol supercharged but this time a 405 but I am lured by the 15k price difference.
Likely this one might move to France with us, if we ever manage to get the youngest out the house, so was wondering if it is madness to look at the 4.4. It would also be quite nice not having to stop so often on our trips down to the Gironde area.

4.4 has a higher tax than the 3.0, £555 compared to £300....it has been said that the 3.0 is more smoother than the 4.4...

As I understand it, the French government has said that they are working towards the price of diesel reaching that of petrol in three years.

However, there is a preponderance of diesels in France and the motoring lobby is very strong here. New vehicles coming on line may be a different story.

If you locate here on a permanent basis, Sandy, then I would expect you would re-register any vehicle you have. Currently there is approximately €800-1000 tax on registration but that is offset by there being no ongoing annual tax. Also the Controle Technique (MoT equivalent) only becomes due when the vehicle is four years old and is every two years after that.

Personally, if I were changing I would stick with diesel in a FF providing it was EU6 compliant but you will make up your own mind.

Having just imported a 2012 4.4 TDV8, I can tell you the import tax was €1658
For a 2013 L405 it would have been €2300, and for a 2013 4.4 SDV8, it was €2920
Still a damn site cheaper than buying in France, even if you could find one here!

Thanks for that. I re-registered my 2008 two years ago and it was about €900 IIRC so it has gone up. Possibly a reflection of the higher value of the later ones?

As you say finding one here is pretty difficult and French pre-owned car prices tend to be much higher than the equivalent in the UK.

Friends of mine have imported discovery’s and range rovers less than 2 years old, and have had to pay nearly 8k!
That’s why I ended up with a 2012 l322, and not an L405, I couldn’t justify the cost.
Also every department has its own scale, so what we pay in Aquitaine, is not the same as elsewhere.
Bloody complicated system here.

Is that to cut down on the time it takes to receive your long list of speeding tickets?

If you are going to be doing the distances, then maybe diesel... but needs to be 2006 compliant to get into major cities... more to be added.

Assuming you are of a certain age... any chance u can do your move before Oct, (Brexit) avoiding ‘the risk’ of having to take a new driving test? Even if u use a rented address to kick off with

I understand the French driving licence is good until 80 Filters are in fact so good that in certain circumstances, when the ambient air is already polluted, a diesel car will tend to extract more particles from the air than it emits. Emissions Analytics worked with........etc etc

New French driving licences for categorie A and B are valid for 15 years from date of issue: Other categories have medical requirements with differing lengths of validity.

I have the old style French driving licence which, at time of issue, had no end date but, with the introduction of the harmonised driving licence, it now has to be renewed by January 2033. Can exchange it for a new one before then but, at 82, think it could well see me out. :  John
