Another layer of security


As a mechanic, it has always bugged me that considering car thieves often use the OBD socket to steal a car, that manufacturers put it in such an accessible place.
I have this afternoon, moved mine into the upper glove box and it can now be locked with the 'valet' function, when leaving the car.
Simple job. Buy an OBD extension cable and route behind the dash.

Just to confuse them more, add a dummy OBD socket in the originals place, wiring up the ground and battery feed. It looks like its connected then, but no communication. Laughing

Image isn't very good, but you get the idea....

You could run a few Volts through the pins of the dummy socket as a little gift for the device that's lucky enough to end up in your car unannounced....

Quote easy to add a covert kill switch too, perhaps on the transmission controller.

In the 70;s my Dad would whip the HT lead off the coil if he ever left the car somewhere iffy.

In the 70s I used to take the rotor arm out if somewhere iffy. Cool John

Many years ago when I worked in Paris and had to leave my car in a station car park in the suburbs, I fitted my own secret cut-out switch. I took out the bits at the end of the car cigarette lighter and fitted a simple on/off push-button switch right at the end so that you could actuate it with a finger pushed into the cigarette lighter socket. The coil LT lead was connected across the switch.

With the cigarette lighter bit itself replaced, no one would know …

 It's "bébéchoon", ackcherly, with accents. 'Steve' to my chums.
20 years ownership of Solihull products, ALL GONE NOW, sniff!
Current motor: Suzuki S-Cross 4WD auto, 1.4 petrol. Oh so reliable! 5 years now and no problems. Oh, all right then, a leaking shocker replaced under guarantee.
