Thoughts on L405

Having just acquired my third L405 and having now experienced many of the engine options, I thought I’d share some experiences with you all.

My first Range Rover was a 2014 Vogue SE in Corris Grey with the 3.0 V6 diesel. Smooth and refined and with adequate power. 38 mpg (per trip computer) on my typical commute, mostly motorway and country lanes. No problems whatsoever.

Swapped for a 2016 Autobiography in Bosporus Grey (beautiful colour in direct sunlight). 4.4 V8 diesel. Smooth but not as refined and with a real step up in performance. Bought last of the 2016 model year, hence equipped with the older infotainment - antiquated but bug free. 33 mpg on my commute. No problems other than faulty oil level sensor that triggered a warning light.

I then deviated into an L494 Sport in 2018. Indulged in an SVR V8 petrol, the upgraded model in Fuji White. Stupidly fast, wonderful noise, surprisingly agile but very harsh ride. Noise sometimes got wearing, as did the boy racers who often felt it necessary to “have a go”. Loved the new InControl Touch Duo infotainment screens - occasional bugs but nothing serious enough to make me want to complain, and nothing a “reboot” wouldn’t fix. The real-time traffic stopped working at one point, but that was quickly diagnosed and the relevant module replaced. Since when the software was very stable. Added Apple CarPlay which is a useful upgrade, not least because I can use Waze as my satnav. Fuel economy took a dive of course, dropping to 23 mpg on the commute. Oh and I had the pixel LED headlamps with laser high beams. The pixel LEDs are just amazing, although the laser high beam only made a very slight difference and only above 50 mph.

Finally, as of yesterday I’m back into an L405. This time it’s the SVA Dynamic in Santorini Black. Same V8 petrol as the SVR but so much more refined, and the ride quality is like a magic carpet (in comparison to the SVR). I’ve only done 70 miles so far but it drives wonderfully, the build quality is perfect and I’m loving the new style seats. First experience of JLR’s head-up display - beware polarizing sunglasses greatly reduced the HUD brightness, although you can still see the display. The rear seating is so comfy as to make me wish I had a chauffeur, although they do steal some boot room. The active steering assist seems to follow the lane markings even round bends, but you will be reminded to put your hands back on the steering wheel after a short while. I had the factory collection as part of the deal - I highly recommend this if you get the chance. It was a very special experience and gave me a real appreciation for the incredible engineering that goes into these cars. The off-road ride through the Jungle track was just jaw dropping.

I’ll keep you updated on the SVA adventure and also upload some photos shortly.

What does it sound like and how does it drive, can you feel an obvious change in Dynamic mode?

Very, very quiet is my overarching impression. Maybe my frame of reference is distorted having come from a RRS SVR which was loud, but it seems much quieter than either of my previous V6 and V8 diesels. I’ve not had chance to play with the driving modes yet, I’ll test the dynamic setting and report back.

I saw this on Youtube but assume from your comment that this possibly isn't standard exhaust note? Dare I saw sounds awesome and I'm sure wont be this loud inside the car Whistle

This looks very nice. So much nicer and understated than the SVR. I love it.
Can't afford one right now but this is definitely on my list.
I like the interior too. There isn't much choice with the SVAD if you don't want duo tone seats, black is the only choice really.
