RR Valuation

Hi everyone,

I am on the lookout for my first FFRR. I have owned a number of cars and believe now is the right time to experience
one. Typically I would use sites such as webuyanycar to get a base price and expect the asking price to be few grand more. Is there a particular reason why for RR the disparity is massive (more than £10k in many instances). I am looking at 2010-2012 5.0 SC cars. I have bought cars of similar age and mileage in the past and have never seen such massive difference.

Can someone please explain why this is so? Sorry, it it comes across as a stupid question.

I've no better insight than you but FWIW my guess would be that you haven't been looking at old £100k cars in your previous experience? If your target car is good then its maybe worth £25k, but there's a huge downside risk because if stuff needs doing then the costs involved can be large (ie £100k car large) especially if entrusted to the main dealer network not on a £25k car scale. So a WBAC set up has to build that risk into their offers whereas all those of us selling our perfect cars know that they're good value at the higher price. Mike - MPx

As above, plus WBAC have a captive market - they give an immediate purchase price, and will buy almost instantly. People who want a quick sale use them e.g. death, divorce, dissolution, desperate students, can’t pay finance, business men who need the money quick for another project - people like that can’t wait and want the money QUICK - WBAC price accordingly and take advantage - plus they never usually stick to quoted price.

A friends daughter had a price for her BMW 120, when she took the car in she ended up owing them money due to all the deductions including only 1 key, alloys kerbed, parking dinks etc etc.

WBAC is usually for the desperate I am afraid and does not give any indication of its true worth. There can be exceptions - perhaps when an expensive £100k car is still under manufacturers warranty, and the risk of repair costs is minimal or covered by the manufacturer or similar 2021 L405 Vogue SE 4.4 V8 DIESEL ~ #17

Yep, WBAC definitely know what they are doing but that is after all their business model and how they make money.

Don't rely on WBAC for a market price guide, far better to look at Parkers, Auto Trader or Car Gurus for much more realistic idea of prices. 09 RR Westminster 3.6TDV8 - Stornoway Grey / Black interior - now gone (sad face)

Not many people realise that WBAC are actually part of the British Car Auction group. So it is in their interest to pay the minimum amount possible so that they can make a larger profit when the car goes to auction.

Go to the BCA website and take down the index number of a car you like. Then go to the WBAC website and put the index number in there. You will immediately get a message that the car can not be valued.

WBAC must have access to amazing market data, then... so perhaps not such a bad guide as long as you can figure out the formula to apply a premium over and above their price, which I guess is the tricky bit.

I am exactly in the same boat. I have sold both my cars and now in the market for 17/67 plate Vogue SE or Autobiography SDV8.

As it is under 3 years old it is still covered by manufacturer as long as it has been serviced every year or 16k miles. So the risk of buying from an auction is minimal on this type car.

Just to experience i have checked BCA website and shortlisted 17 plate 3.0 Vogue SE at 31k miles, 1 Owner, had 2 services at LR, last serviced 2 months ago, tyres good condition, bodywork good condition just kerbing on 3 wheels and small chip on the bonnet. Autotrader valuation was £47k for private sale and part-ex £43k. Cheapest similar on main dealer on sale was around £52k.

I turned up to the auction at BCA Nottingham it went for £44,100. On top of this there will £1.5k in fees for private buyers.

WBAC offered £41.7k for the same car. 2017 Range Rover SDV6 AB

The problem is WBAC is affecting the general market price.

Go into a dealer and they(probably) look at wbac & that’s the starting and for many the finishing point...

If u like are turning themselves into market makers simply by flooding the airwaves with their ads and their prices. Filters are in fact so good that in certain circumstances, when the ambient air is already polluted, a diesel car will tend to extract more particles from the air than it emits. Emissions Analytics worked with........etc etc

He who dies with the most toys wins...

Yes WBAC and BCA tend to control secondhand vehicle prices.

If you look at the volume of vehicles BCA sell on a weekly or monthly basis that come from WBAC then it is easy to see their impact on used car prices.

All WBAC vehicles are sold under the UKCGR sticker at BCA auctions. On Thursday there are around 300 UKCGR vehicles up for sale at my local BCA centre. If they can make an average mark up of £1000 per vehicle then this is a healthy profit. Imagine what the turnover is on a daily and national basis....

Many thanks everyone. I guess the takeaway is a RR can be exorbitantly expensive to repair hence businesses such as WBAC build in sufficient buffer for any unforeseeable repairs. Still surprised by the margins. Autotrader and the likes value most cars very similarly to what WBAC offers.
