Cluster not illuminating with lights?

So my barrel of laughs I’ve bought recently through yet another curve ball just now... as there have been slight improvements I just drove home in the dark for the first time and the cluster doesn’t light up? Any ideas? I know it was fiddled with as someone has disabled the engine management light which was awfully kind but where do I start with this? Current stable:
2006 BMW M6
2007 4.2 V8 S/C FF
Gone:
2002 4.4 V8 FF
