5.0 S/c Ab strange engine noise

Hi

I have a 2017 5.0 S/C autobiography that has a whirring/whistle noise at around 1,600 revs, it happens in drive and neutral , it is in with a main dealer who say it is not a problem but i have never had this with the other L 405 range rovers i have owned.

Has anybody else come across this?

Hi Craig

It is more of a whine, especially noticeable when you are off the throttle at around 1400 to 1600 revs, it's driving me mad.

The S/C is a whiney sounding motor in my opinion, made worse because theres mo exhaust note, I notice my supercharger whining when coming off the throttle too, or atleast thats my take on it.

Turbo V8’s sound different, or atleast AMG and Porsche do.

Any chance you can record a short video of the noise? Also have you had a listen around to hear where it might be coming from?

Not easy as its only really a whine when I'm driving and to be honest doesn't pick up on phones etc. I put it down to the S/C on this motor as my V8 AMG cars never whines like that.

I test drove a few before I landed up with the Fattie I have now, and they all made the same noise, its not a high pitch whine as in an alternator or gearbox pump, but slightly lower frequency.

Some have it louder, some softer, but all V8 5.0SC I tested had this phenomenon.

Mine is worst at about 1400 on coasting, what annoys me is that often cruising speed is just at the right rpm to have the noise on permanently.

The noise is accompanied by an equally faint vibration on the steering, most annoying.

Chief nut and bolt man at JLR locally told me they all do it, something to do with the ACE pump or DSC pump, whichever name it goes with, but yes, that pump...

My 2008 SC V8 Sport had a rattly ACE pump. My 2011 V8 5.0SC L322 had no ACE pump, and was quiet, including the supercharger, but it did have a rattly timing chain issue from time to time..

405 has ACE, I truly wonder if this really is it...

Anyway, I am learning to live with it..
