I'm having a bit of a problem with a Tonga touch up set. I've shook it for about half an hour but it's still coming out almost black. It's miles off the actual colour of the car.

It's a genuine land rover kit (two sticks) so can't think why it would be the wrong colour. Anyone else touched up Tonga successfully.

It only has a couple of very small marks that i'll take a long time getting right with the touch up.... If I can get one to match!  My Previous RR's!

have you done a test on a scrap bit of metal or similar, it might dry to the proper tonga colour. ... - .- -.

Hmm, I'll try that but I doubt it. The bits that need doing have already been touched by the last owner (he provided the kit) and they looked like tar splashes at 1st glance.


think i might have to try a new one, but at £15 a pop didn't want to find it was wrong again.... My Previous RR's!

Hi Hoppy,

Personally I wouldn't bother with the touch up sticks - get hold of a genuine LR Spray Can instead (and make sure the production date on the can is recent)...

Shake the can well for a good 10 mins at room temperature and then spray a little puddle into a small container - cup cake foil etc.

Allow the paint to settle for while until it goes tacky (Tonga green is very black when straight out of the can but it does dry to a good colour match - have faith)...

(also hold the can upside down and give it a short spray to clear the nozzle once you have got the amount of paint you may need in the foil)

Using a cocktail stick collect a little bead of the now tacky paint on one end and gently apply to the cleaned chipped area - ideally the bead of paint will fill the chip completely and leave a noticably raised surface at first - the paint will shrink when drying so you may need to apply a second time, or more, before the dried paint has filled the chipped area.

Patience is vital at this point - allow the touch-up paint time to dry / set for at least a week before very gently using a mild cutting compound (T-Cut) to polish off the repainted area and remove the excess paint.

Once happy with the flattened / finished surface - wax / polish as usual.

Apply the clear lacquer in the same way if necessary - but small chips I wouldn't bother trying to lacquer as I find the lacquer usually sets a lot harder than the paint ever does and is more difficult to remove the excess.

Minor scratches and chipped door edges etc. can also be touched up this way to good effect.

Place the touch-up stick in warm water for 10 minutes then give it a good shake
