Problems hooking up a Sony TV to a Sony soundbar

I have a Sony 32” tv bought earlier this year, model KDL32WE613. I found the sound quality poor, typical of modern thin tvs. So I bought a Sony sound bar, model ht-mt300. Set it up according to instructions, so its linked to the TV by an optical lead. My problem is that whilst the sound comes out brilliantly, I can only control the sound with the remote for the bar; the volume on the tv can still be controlled via the tv remote so you can get sound from both sources. Also, the TV menu doesn’t show the sound bar as a paired device. This can’t be right!

Anybody with appropriate knowledge that can offer suggestions? I’m no techie and I simply assumed if I plugged in a sony sound bar to a sony tv it would automatically sync and I could then control the volume with the tv remote.

Thoughts or suggestions welcome - but in simple terms please!

Thanks

Andy

I don't have any Sony TV's, however,

Any instructions with the soundbar ?

Any option on the TV menu settings to set the sound output ?

Does the sounder have an HDMI input that you could connect to the HDMI ARC connection on the TV ?

Thanks Alastair.

I followed the instructions provided with both the tv and the soundbar.

There is no hdmi outlet for the bar and I was advised that using the optical lead was a better connection than hdmi in any event.

I have tried various combination of audio setting on the tv yet no joy. Also, when I go to sync, the only external device it recognises is the Sky hd box, which is linked by Hdmi.

Life used to be so simple in the days when I had a Saturday job selling TVs and hifis in the early 80s. Then all you needed was co ax and 5 pin DIN leads and everything connected to everything else without issue.

I’m pretty sure there is an obvious fix to this, but I’m darned if I can work it out!

HDMI allows more integration than optical.

HDMI ARC will pass the sound out of the TV - so if that can connect to the soundbar, you may be able to do more.

I have a mix of Samsung & LG and they are all slightly different. The Samsung just worked with my amp - the LG I had to go into the sound settings & tell it what to do.

I've got the same issue with a Panasonic TV and a Yamaha sound bar,. Unfortunately the TV doesn't have an optical output and the soundbar only has an optical input so I have to use a converted box between the two.

There doesn't seem to be any way of disabling the sound on the TV via the menus.

Anyway, have you tried plugging a plug into the headphone socket on the TV? 2010 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE

Most TVs have the ability to turn the sound off from the internal speakers, it may just be within the extended settings menu.

Looking at your TV manual on the internet it appears that you have to change the ‘speakers’ setting to ‘Audio’. The normal setting is ‘TV speakers’

The setting is under the ‘Sync’ menu 2019 L405 SDV8 Autobiography

We have an LG flat screen TV and bought a good quality sound bar whch had a bluetooth connection to the two seperate bass speakers that came with the sound bar.
After two weeks of faffing about trying to get them connected then the bass units losing the connection we took the sound bar back to the store (Currys / PC world) and exchanged them for a new Dyson vacuum cleaner!

The guy we dealt with said that we werent the first people to have trouble getting sound bars set up!!

Thanks, I’ll give that a go.
