In my experience for domestic use you are best to use a non-electric twin gel bed softener. If you have a Harvey’s Crown unit it’s very similar to the one we use (ours isn’t Harvey branded but the same in all other respects).

What has ‘packed up’ with yours? The gel canisters can be replaced if all else is Ok. Suggest to get a softener engineer to inspect, will be cheaper than a complete new unit.

Ours is 15 years old now and still going strong (we live in one of the hardest water areas in UK, over 300 mg/l) just make sure it doesn’t run out of salt for the regen programme or the gel bed can become so contaminated that it won’t regenerate and then you have to replace the gel canisters
