Competition time, it's let me down, AA on route, issue? :)

2 weeks into ownership and it's let me down for the first time. Had the FBH on, could see the windscreen part defrosted, got in but wasn't toasty like it normally is? Then it wouldn't start, just a click Sad Obvious issue is the battery, but it was on a battery smart charger all day and all night? Was up to the point I tried to start it? So maybe the starter sticking? Although the FBH turning off suggests it has a voltage issue.

Anyway, called the AA who say they'll be here in 35 mins. No doubt they'll test the battery. I do have their Parts and Labour cover so as long as they diagnose it properly I should be covered.

So, competition time, kudos points to those who get it right. Battery or Starter?

Having a similar age car, i'll go for the starter!

I replaced mine some 5000 miles ago.

I've been through all this and still not fully resolved. I had the infamous click, replaced the starter 18 months ago. Seemed better for a while but still the occasional click. Just recently replaced the battery and although no more clicks at the moment, the battery is not holding charge under load so next for me is the alternator.....

Check the voltage at the starter solenoid terminal.
Several cases reported of cable fault from battery to solenoid. Corrosion on mid run joints. One recent was down to c7 volts.

And the winner is.......

f**k knows Rolling Eyes

Fair play to the AA, arrived within 20mins of my call. They put their battery tester on, it passed but said low on charge, run for 104mins! He said that was unexpected especially seeing as it had been on a smart charger all night. He then jumped it from his jump pack and it fired straight up with no hesitation. Left it running, turned off, tested again, passed and now no prompt to leave running. Then tried leaving it say there with lights and fans on for a minute, fired up no problem. Stop start a number of times, quickly fired up, no sign the starter or battery was tired. Checked battery connections, all fine. Battery doesn't look old either.

Explained that this has happened a number of times before. Sometimes a few goes and it starts, a couple of other times it needed me to put my jumper pack on. Also explained in the main it starts in the morning, it is when I switch off again. Maybe heat, but in this case it was -2 out there.

He suggested possible drain but the smart charger would take care of all but the biggest of drains.

Ultimately he couldn't work it out. He said could be a dodgy connection somewhere, but marked it up on his sheet as a sticky starter.

For now I've took it off the smart charger. I'm using it to go to work and back tomorrow and Wednesday, so two 40 miles round trips with a start at the beginning and end of the day. We'll see how it goes. It's then off to JGS on Thursday for the gearbox flush, I'll ask them to have a gander and see if they can spot a dodgy / corroded connection somewhere to the starter.

So the jury is still out. Pain in the arse as the missus can't use it until it's sorted. Hopefully by the end of the week I'll have an idea. AA have said they'll pay £500 towards the fix, just need to work out what it is!!

The 'battery seems fine but intermittently no reaction other than a click when pressing the starter button' on my 2012 WM was cured by fitting a new starter motor. It seems a very common fault. Note that the old motor goes back to LR for refurbishment and you get a credit for it against the price of the new one (at franchise dealers). Only Range Rovers since 1988

A replacement starter (Denso, same as original one) was £260 from site sponsors Opie.

No need to send the old one back.
