Sat Nav/TV Module issues 2004 Blue Plugs

I've had this 2004 Vogue for a couple of months now, initially I had an issue with my MK3 navigation drive not shutting down properly. When removed the TV tuner would take over OK and work, a month or so ago I replaced the Mk3 with a BMW Mk4 DVD navigation computer and flashed it with some modded landrover firmware. Its been working fine since then, no issues at all for several weeks.

However the other day it restarted twice as I was driving along and then eventually froze with the map still on the screen, the radio was still playing but the screen was unresponsive. I stopped the engine and restarted it which caused it to reset and the TV module took over. Most annoyingly it looked at the time like the MK4 had died.

I got home and thought I would have a look, after unplugging the MK4 at the back and replugged it started up OK and seemed to be healthy. Next day I went out again and it all worked OK for about 10 minutes and the same happened, restarted a couple of times and then locked up.

I had a few errands to do including multiple engine starts but the TV module did not take over, I then unplugged the MK4 whilst I was out and still couldn't get the TV module to take over.

Once I got home I thought I better have a closer look, I removed the MK4 drive leaving the Red plug in and taking the blue plug from the TV tuner and it started up OK and displayed on the screen. I did notice thought that if I touched the connector on the back the drive restarted which was odd. (I was actually able to reflash the drive back to a BMW V32 firmware just incase that was the issue but it hasn't helped).

The boot all seems dry, certainly not "wet" on any of the components or on the carpets etc.

I still have my MK3, which shows exactly the same behavior, (my MK3 is OK just doesn't shut down properly once its finished with - if its manually powered on it works perfectly for hours at a time), I also have a spare TV tuner/entertainment module which is YIL00022, the one fitted is actually YIL000023 but I believe they are superseded part numbers rather than actually different but please correct me if this is wrong? The spare TV tuner (22) does exactly the same, nothing, as the one that is currently fitted.

The only other piece of puzzle is the blue connector on the loom for TV tuner is a bit dirty, I have covered it in contact cleaner but I don't really know how I can check the internal condition etc, the navigation loom is available as a spare part for a few quid on ebay but the blue plug I think is the cause of my issues is not on this satnav loom but on the main entertainment loom for the car?

Another side question, the GPS connector is that brilliant - would the loss of a GPS signal (cable coming unplugged from the aerial) cause it to lock up and crash? I can't imagine it would be that sensitive as its only the same as zero signal coming when you enter a tunnel but it was just a thought.

I have currently got the MK4 unplugged to see if I can coax the TV tuner back into life but so far no joy. The screen backlight is coming on and everything has power as far as I can tell.

Beginning to get annoyed with it now as I fix one thing and another goes wrong! 2005 E60 M5

I would suggest removing all units and getting inside to look for corrosion -- plenty of contact cleaner and a soft toothbrush maybe required! Current: 2011 FFRR Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

I've had a bit of a mess with it today and realised the blue sleeve comes off to reveal a normal ish connector which has some corrosion.

I've attacked with some contact cleaner and a toothbrush but I cant seem to improve it much. With the sleeve removed and the navigation drive running I gently lowered the naked connector onto the pins whilst watching the screen and got a little flicker and then the proper nav startup splash screen for a second and then it was gone - which tells me that its this connector that is the issue so I'm going to have to try and workout (get dad to be honest!) to try and replace some of the pins in this connector I think. 2005 E60 M5

I think you'll need to go further and open up the units themselves -- I would imagine you'll find corrosion inside on the boards and pins in the units! Current: 2011 FFRR Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

Both units are good replacements to be honest and I have tried with another spare navigation computer and TV tuner and its no different which all points towards this one plug. I have managed to get my head around the basic layout of it, if the car did not have navigation the white plug would not be in use, that is actually the video feed from the navigation as far as I can tell. Having driven it today the radio worked perfectly for the entire journey (which shows all devices plugged into ibus are currently responding) and satnav woman was still warning me of the speed cameras so that showed the nav computer was on, and aware of where we were via GPS coordinates. I was also able to change radio station using the buttons but there was just no display. As I mentioned I did manage to restore the display for a couple of seconds during my cleaning attempts which shows its a bad connection in this multiplug.

The PO had already had issues here and replaced the original TV tuner with the one that is currently fitted, the original tuner was missing a pin I could see this as he provided the old parts. 2005 E60 M5
