Introductions

Hi all

New to the forum and RR. I have been thinking of becoming an owner for a while now and as my Alfa station car is not far from death and no longer required to be dumped for days in a car park, now might be the time to jump.

Currently looking at 11/12 4.4tdv8 and have a question for the more experienced. Should I go for a 70k or a 140k example? My thought is a lower miles car may be coming up to needing bushes, arm, bags, etc. whereas a high miles will probably have had it done although it may need it all again by then. Not worried about engine or gearbox, questioning turbo's possibly.

Very tempted by ajgalaxy2012 offering as a lot of that work has been done. But like a lot of people 140k just nags at me a little.

Not scared of bills. I own a 2008 4.7 Maserati Quattroporte, just don't really want 2 very needy motors.

Interested to hear your thoughts as owners and enthusiasts.

Thanks all

Gary

I'd say that even a 70k example will most likely have had suspension arms/bushes replaced and a 140k probably had them twice if not more. They wear, simple as that really. Suspension air bags don't seem to fail with any real correlation to mileage/age (within reason) so I wouldn't worry about that. What I would be looking for is one with no more than 2/3 owners from new (so it isn't a lemon that's been passed from pillar to post) and one with a cast iron service history and MOT history, there's no reason for any of these cars to fail on things like suspension wear or tyre wear or dodgy wipers etc., simply shows it could have been looked after better. They're out there as well, I just bought one from a dealer (a 2010 TdV8 VSE) with 72k at a good price with 2 owners from new, FSH, and only one failed one MOT, and that was on healight aim, NO advisories on any of the MOT's. Happy hunting. Drives:

Gary,
My take on the high mileages are this. A high mileage car is more likely to have gained the miles on the motorway, which gives more wear, 140,000 sat on the motorway at 1200 rpm, engine nicely warmed up, DPF able to regen etc 'v' 70,000 around town revving much higher in lower gears and engine not getting fully warmed up etc?

Most of the usual jobs have been done on mine which will possibly need doing on others eg Turbo Drain Mod, Brake Lines front to rear etc. BMW i3 Electric Car

I definitely agree with the 1 or 2 owner and cheap tyres thoughts.

Thanks

Between 70-80k miles either the alternator can go or the starter.
Sometimes both.

Post 80k cars have mostly had this been and done.

What you really need done is the turbo drain mod.
This is not so much about miles.

AJG's car has had this done btw.

. Cheers, Greg

Agreed. I used to do 40k plus a year all motorway in 5th or 6th. II was impressed with the amount of work you completed in 18 months. I would be the same. I cannot live with rumbles, clunks, squeaks and always go the proactive route and maintain what is needed.

Defo AJs car. It's a forum car so looked after. I'd have bought it over the phone if I was in the market. I'm trying to convince my brother to buy it Whistle 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Buckingham Blue with Ivory and clear glass = "Rory"
