L405 22" Turbine - milking/ degradation

Contemplating swapping the 22" alloys on our L405 for a set of genuine LR 22" turbine alloys.

Having recently had diamond cut alloys on a VW, they had a tendency to 'milk' over time (appearance of small white spots under the black diamond finish) and the lacquer on the black diamond also visibly started to peel.

Can anyone please advise as to the condition durability on the 22" Turbine alloy please (do tend to keep on top of alloys/ regularly clean them but would like to know about peoples experiences)?

Thanks.

Thumbs Up

Mine are showing their age a bit, but not enough for a refurb.

Thanks... trying to weigh up whether it’s worth the hassle/ like them enough... our 22s are immaculate/ really nice wheels and as we know 22” turbines are very expensive to buy; used ones on eBay, many with with signs of wear and tear seem over priced given that refurbishment of diamond cut wheels is also expensive (e.g £125 to have one 18” diamond cut wheel properly refurbished a few year ago). Thumbs Up

And we have 5x22s whereas sets on eBay mainly seem to be sets of 4.

Apart from kerbing, mine are all good.

That’s another point.. if deciding to buy separates are there many different shades/ combinations?

Some looked smoked, some look bright silver and some look to me like ‘normal alloy silver’

This is why I prefer the all gloss black turbines. With the diamond cut ones you’ve only got to nick a kurb and straight away your through the lacquer and the corrosion can start. I had diamond cut ones on my c63. They looked fantastic for a couple of years then started to degrade from road salt eating into them.

Surely all gloss black are worse - the slightest kerning will show - at least with the diamond cut it kind of looks the same.

JLR only did 2 colours AFAIK - there's a black & diamond cut - and the other is black & dark atlas grey - so still a 2 tone finish, but darker than the diamond cut.

There are all black ones, but I think they are refurbs.

I haven't heard of anyone that can refurb 2 tone - so if you buy a set of those, look after them. The diamond cut ones seem to be good for one refurb.

When I needed new tyres, I bought a new set of wheels & tyres - then sold the old wheels - it worked out cheaper than 4 new tyres & a refurb.....

Anyway - to answer the original question - I have 2 sets of turbines (winter & summer tyres fitted) and even the winter set which are well herbed don't seem to be showing any issues anywhere else on the wheel.

A point to remember Ryan is the turbines can only be refurbed once or twice as the rim profile disappears... And, be careful with the quality/longevity of a refurb as the diamond cutting can drag and make imperfections under the lacquer and, poor quality can also get very sharp edges... These are prone to milking VERY quickly!

So, knowing what a perfectionist you are Ryan! Buy a new take off set if i were you Thumbs Up

Prices for used, genuine and obviously in need of a full refurb turbine wheels on eBay are - in the main - ridiculous. By the time you've factored in a proper refurb, they're nowhere near worth it.
