Newby with a P38

Hello all!

Here is my new (to me) 1996 P38 2.5 DSE. I bought it from a good friend of mine who has been using it as a bit of an off-road toy for the last 3 years and as a result has added a few parts to it along with the usual general maintenance.

It currently has Terra-firma shocks and steering damper, General Grabber AT2 tyres, rock sliders and a D2 A-bar with LED light bar mounted.

Condition-wise, it's mechanically spot on but could benefit from a good clean up and polish at the weekend! So far I have discovered a lot of condensation in the spare wheel well and the rear windows fogging up which I think I have traced back to an old and tired boot seal so a new one is on its way and also the fuel cap release button has disintegrated into a million pieces (while I was waiting to get fuel!) so again, a new one is on its way!

I do plan on trying to restore the faded trims and also giving it a bit of a polish and also giving the inside a bloody good scrub as the condensation has given it a bit of a "ripe" smell. There will be other plans on the way, as I'd love to turn it into a decent overlander for trips down to my parents' in the south of Spain so I am already on the hunt for a roof rack/basket!

I've previously had a 1.8 Freelander 1, a td4 Freelander 2 and a TDV6 D3 but I've wanted one of these for a long time!

I bought my 2.5DT in 1999/2000 when I took early retirement and made regular visits down to the Algarve via Calpe in Spain where my long time work colleague bought a villa when he retired at the same time. It is still the only brand new car I have ever owned, but had c120k miles on the clock when I swapped it for a Td6 vogue L322. It never let me down once despite the reputation P38’s got for unreliability.

Enjoy yours as much as I did mine.

Thank you! My parents had both a 2.5 DSE P38 and then a 4.4 V8 L322 and to be honest the P38 was more reliable for us, but both were great cars to be in regardless, hence my purchase really. My mother got me into Land Rovers at a young age and now I'm back in the position to own one it just made sense.

I'm looking forward to a long drive down to Almeria in this one. The last time I did the drive was in a 2001 X100 Jag XKR and it didn't skip a beat!

Thanks,
James

You’ll love the cruise down in the P38. Did Southern Spain twice in our 2 P38’s and they never missed a beat.

Also did it in a 1992 Classic in 2012 and that never played up until back on the drive at home after we had completed 3200 miles in 2 weeks. It split an auto box cooler pipe and emptied transmission fluid all over the drive.

That sounds amazing!

The NC500 and a trip down to Almeria are top of the list, no idea when we'll get to do them yet though!

Very nice indeed! Only thing I can advise from what a couple of mates have told me when doing theirs's is take your time massively when fitting the new rear seal, if they are not fitted perfectly the leaks come back. I have to do mine too and have not got round to it yet! 2003 VW Golf V6 4motion

Thank you. I am not in a rush to do it as it seems to have calmed down a bit, but I have ordered the part just in case.

I'll be giving it a proper going over this weekend including removing a lot of dead leaves that seem to be up in the top of the tailgate so hopefully, that should give me a better idea of whether or not it needs to be done sooner rather than later.

After a year of ownership, I decided this just wasn't getting the love it deserved as it sat in my garage for the majority of the year and as a result I have now sold it and bought myself an L322.

I'll start a new thread in the L322 section as I already (obviously) have a few Qs.

I love the new car, but I must admit I was very sad to see the P38 go. Another one ticked off the list for me though! Thumbs Up
