DPF full. Visit dealer. Limp mode. Engine light on.

Hello all. Have a 16MY 3.0 AB. We have had it 4 months and the yellow DPF light has come on a few times. A motorway journey clears it. This morning the red DPF full light came on and no power. Engine light on.

Any ideas ?

Does this mean a new DPF.

Had it serviced back in November and the service due light was back on in December !!!

Either you have an intake leak (a few folks have had this) or your daily mileage is very low with stop start town driving. The dpf is rarely at fault itself. 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Buckingham Blue with Ivory and clear glass = "Rory"

2019 Range Rover Vogue SE 2.0 PHEV Siberian Silver

Had this the other day, albeit on. 4.4.

LR Assist came out and by driving around with the laptop plugged in, force regenerated a DPF burn cycle to clear it out.

Actually it didn’t work for reasons the tech couldn’t understand, but the fault cleared itself a bit later in the day and the engine got back full power.

No problems since. Touch wood.

As dr rob says. Excess or overly fast filling of dpf Could be plenum pipes leaking or cracked inlet/outlet manifold. Get a high pressure smoke test done
Could also be faulty rear dpf sensor - get them to check the voltage. Normal level is 0.7-0.8V but If dpf is full it will read 1.1 or more if working correctly. However be aware the levels are calculated by algorithm not real actual fill levels themselves. It is all sensor driven.

There is lots on here about the 4.4 tdv8 engine but not the 3.0l. However I know the jag forums have reference to the 3.0L having cracked manifold issues.

And DONT let the dpf soot fill value exceed 28.5 or LR cannot do a forced regen!

Just had a thought. The swift re-emergence of the service indicator may be due to excessive "Fuel/Diesel in Oil dilution" - This is due to the Car pumping Excess Diesel into the combustion chamber to trigger a Regen. If its not regaining, then the fuel remains unburnt and dilutes the oil.

If you can get this read by an IID tool or similar, it'd show what your dilution is. When I got a service Required warning, My reading was 12 (not sure what measurement that is, prob %) and after I did an oil and filter change, it went to Zero and normal regens restarted. It will trigger a warning/Service required at "7" BTW I believe..

During a regen the injectors squirt extra fuel, post detonation, into the combustion chamber (not the crankcase) and thus most of the extra squirt is sent downstream on the exhaust stroke into the DPF which is obviously already very hot.

Basically a fire then takes place in the DPF.

The extent of this fire (the temperature) is in part controlled by the oxygen level in the intake charge regulated by the Exhaust Gas Recirculation system.

Some of that extra squirt though seeps past the rings into the crankcase, diluting the oil which, over time, gets to 7% diesel to engine oil. That switches on the Service Required message.

Not sure that moves us any further forward but as told to me by a seemingly very well informed LR Assist chap.

Update red dpf light - solution

Right, just had my car back from the LR dealer having had a red dpf light come on and not able to clear - had rear sensor replaced. They couldn’t force regen the dpf (they got lower soot readings but the engine Ecu failed to recognise the lower reading and it remained in restricted power with red light on.)

LR dealer suggested getting the dpf cleaned to get a soot reading lower than 28.5 so they could force regen (£95 a pop + vat)

Took it to a terraclean franchise (performance engineering company) who did it for £180 + vat. They also cleared all the red lights and had the soot level down to 1.9g of soot. it has run fine since and soot levels rose to 5.99 over the next 20-30 miles but had a motorway run for 50 miles the other day and plugged the IID in for the trip. The car started doing its own regens along the way at around 350 degrees so it’s back to normal operation again (was failing to initiate Normal regens before)
