It’s done 75,000, but I had the gearbox oil (but not the sump filter) changed at 63,000.

I may get it done again at 80.000 but would insist on a filter change next time.

No, just the usual P0 40 etc.. sensor that I always get, but it is a while since I changed up and down high and low ratio or manually paddled through the gears.
The flashing N was the major clue that I would like to understand, but it was obviously preventing gear selection and I presume stuck in P .

My last journey immediately before parking up for 5 weeks was a 30 mile motorway trip but in absolute foul weather where the roads were very wet.

Moisture in the XY switch would easily confuse the gearbox module...

Oooh errr missus

I feel I must add ,..by singing praise to my local independent garage AJR in Oldham.

I rang them just before closing time on Friday afternoon and spoke to Neil, the mech who has done my MOT for the last couple of years.
He told me, if I still had problems Monday AM to ring him again and they would come out to me and get it going.
Now that is what I call Excellent Customer Service.
I will be calling in Monday AM to thank him personally.
