Rear solid brake pipe replacement

At my last MOT, they noted that the rear solid brake pipes (the ones above the axle) were showing a bit of corrosion, but advised that cleaning them up and waxoyling them would be good for a few more years. Obviously I don't want to scrimp on safety but I have been using this garage for over 30 years and I trust them.

Took the car in for a service on Friday, to a local LR indy, (not the MOT place) and they also pointed out the brake pipes, but they were more of the "you really should change them, we've seen them fail before" approach. So I asked them to quote me.

I know they are in a bit of a sod of a position to get to, but presumably easier on a lift. They said they would make up the pipes themselves - so that's OK, I would expect all of £10 per side for that. £20 if we're being really generous.

Anyway they came back with an estimate of £600 to do the job, and that's assuming they don't have any other problems along the way. Am I unrealistic or does that sound like a hell of a lot of money?

I generally trust this indy, they looked after my previous L322 as well as this one and they seem to really know their stuff and they are thorough, but prices seem to be creeping up significantly.

Would welcome your views? 5.0 S/C Autobiography - now gone to pastures new....

There is quite a lot of under trim to remove and replace.
I recently replaced all my hard lines with copper, a couple of rolls of the stuff just for the rears.

The original lines 'hidden' behind the trim shields were totally shot and snapped variously when removing them!!

Given the work involved to complete the job, I don't think that is too far out. Or was I just 'slow'. Wink L322 3.6 TDV8 Vogue. 07MY

That post looks like a LOT of work, I'd be very happy with all of that at £600!

This quote was just for the solid pipes at the rear, the transverse ones, that's all! 5.0 S/C Autobiography - now gone to pastures new....

Once you start, you may just have to keep going! Once you start taking off the plastic covers, you may find everything is rotten. Shocked

Doing the rears isn't so bad, with an in car flaring tool if the pipes running from front to back are OK you can cut and flare in fittings below the tank cover (makes it easier to get the rear cross pipe in then).

My MOT guy didn't like the cross pipe either, but having got it out it was actually OK, just some surface rust.

When I did my rears on the TDV8 (replaced flexis as well) it took me a leisurely day from start to finish, on the drive.

My time, and @ £35 for pipe and fittings (had the tool, and the flexis of course @ £50 iirc)

If your front ones (flexi to connector/ABS) haven't been done, they will also need doing (all the rustiness is hidden behind the plastic inner wheelarch. .
Experience is the only genuine knowledge, but as time passes, I have forgotten more than I can remember Wink
