What is a good log to burn?

Just bought a firepit and I'm looking for some good quality logs to burn, so the guests arriving tomorrow night can stay warm outside. Having no experience of this, I could do with being pointed in the right direction.

Serious replies only please guys! 2010 MY Vogue SE TDV8 3.6 Stornoway Grey- fully loaded

In terms of what type of wood to burn it is worth bearing in mind the heavier and therefore denser the wood, the higher its calorific value and therefore the longer it will burn.

Hardwoods tend to be denser than softwoods such as pine and spruce and some of the densest are oak and beech.

However, some of the very dense hardwoods like oak and elm can be very difficult to burn, so it is usually best to burn them with another type of wood as well. Softwoods tend to be easy to light and to burn quickly (making them very good kindling).

Some species like spruce and horse chestnut spit badly making them a hazard in an open fire.

Some of the best woods to burn are ash, beech, hornbeam, hawthorn, crab apple and wild cherry. Thumbs Up

What Mick said but bare in mind the wood must be seasoned ie dried a bit other wise the pyrolisation of flamable gases is extingushed by the expanding steam from the moisture in the wood.but back in the real world get some dry logs Thumbs Up 2008 MY Supercharged

Well, we ended up burning what I'm led to believe was pine. Stunk the house out it did- smelled like Fajitas for about a week!! Took ages to get it going, but when it did, it was a splendid fire!! 2010 MY Vogue SE TDV8 3.6 Stornoway Grey- fully loaded

Personally I never burn pine, it spits too much due to the high sap content, and takes ages to get going. Evil or Very Mad

I stick to Ash, Oak (especially at Xmas) Sycamore, and anything else dry and very dead we can get in the woods. Always helps when an old Ash tree falls over one of the rides, from canker for example....
