Hi again, ive asked a few questions and always got the answer and for that i am truly grateful. now if i could ask again please? i am seeing lots of tdv8 for sale as spares or repairs with turbos gone,is it such a bad job to repair these or do they do internal damage to the engine? ive looked for ages to find someone who has fitted turbos at home succesfully but cant,i am looking for my next project and have seen some great looking cars but have been uneasy about buying because of lack of info,so have any of you gone down this route and ended up with a running good v8? as always many thanks in advance

It's an engine out job so it's pretty involved. I think by the time you bought two new turbos, done all the work to replace them and got the car up and running again, it often isn't economically viable to repair these cheaper TDV8s. Good runners have dropped so much in value you may as well just get one without problems.

Can they be repaired: yes of course. Is it worth your trouble? Probably not.

thanks for reply so it cant be done without pulling the engine? which obviously is a lot of work i read of some company was doing it without taking the motor out,if it can be done would give it a go,just seems a shame to scrap a nice car for turbo failure,i work on hgv s so have some decent facilities at hand and time is not an issue, but i see what your saying the prices are dropping for runners is it worth the work, maybe someone else will come forward and tell me if they did it . many thanks again

My secondary turbo on 4.4 tdv8 was replaced in a few hours. No engine out malarkey. Don't know about primary one but led to believe it's the same. Probably down to the knowledge and experience of who does the work. I used Rovertune who only work on LR stuff and are highly knowledgeable  Gone to a good home: 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Buckingham Blue with Ivory and clear glass = "Rory"

If you use the search function you will see people have changed both turbos on the 3.6 without removing the engine, I remember one of the is much easier than the other. When one of my turbos snapped its impeller shaft my indie dropped the engine to changed both turbos, he reckons it was easier than doing it in situ. 2015 4.4 AB

On the 3.6 the turbos can be done without taking the engine out it’s not the easiest job but possible ( we did one recently parked up on a mates drive ) they went only because the egr’s had failed

the problem you will have is not knowing the damage to the rest of the engine.

Turbos themselves are not easy to change but it is doable engine in, and the EGRs will warrant doing as well, but if the engine has ingested bits of the failed turbos then its possible it is scrap.

There has for a long time been problems getting new bits for the short engine on the 3.6, I'm not sure if that is still the case, but once you get into stripping the engine down the money starts to go up......quickly so it ceases to be a viable option. if bits have damaged head, pistons, valves etc then you may as well just buy a non knackered one to start with.

As you are unlikely to be able to run the car with knackered turbos then knowing how bad the damage is isgointot involve some in depth inspection. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Find the used replacement engine cost, this will give you an idea,of risk
