Poll:Best All Season winter tyres that handles well in snow

Hello,
i currently have scorpion verde all season, and i have read good and bad on them on wet, and bad on snow
i would like to fit a new set of all weather.
dont want to go back to swapping them twice a year like i use to do with my lr3. i had nokian wr2 an wr3 which are amazing in snow and ice conditions and wet cold conditions but cant use them in hot temperatures during summer.
so i am putting a poll here if you can help chose a all weather tyre that likes snow

I have no direct experience of any of those particular tyres, but on my old D4 I used Vredestein Wintrac Extreme on winter visits to both Finland and Norway where they performed without issue. The bonus being they were also very good over the British summer, so no need to change.

I have had Pirelli Scorpion Verde All Season M+S on my last 5 RR’s and have found them satisfactory in all conditions.

I did run a set of Nokian winter tyres on my old XC90 which were superb in the winter and snow, but not too good in the summer.

There is no answer to your question - such a tyre doesn't exist. Tyres are always a compromise.....

Fresh snow you can achieve with an open M&S tread pattern

It's ice or compacted snow that's the problem - winter tyres have a higher silica content, so stay more flexible at lower temperatures - but also wear faster in the heat. They also have sipes cut into the tread which heats the tyres up, but wear out more quickly. They also have degraded performance in the warm weather.

However, it's always a compromise - something slightly better on ice is likely slightly worse on a warm dry day.....

As Alistair says it’s always a compromise.

I’ve been running Scorp verde on my D4 and on the 322 (swapped the wheels onto the D4 when the fattie went) and also on my 405. Been happy with them over the last few winters. They aren’t any better than normal tyres in icy conditions tho. I have also had full scorpion winters on the D4 which are better in the cold but as said wear out fast in the summer, had them on the D4 for about a year and 10,000 miles and wore through half the tread over the year.

Pirelli now have new scorpion zeros out which are also an all season tyre but not an eco tyre like the verde. Not had them yet but will be next on the list when needed.

For UK conditions, most of the time, and all season tyre will be fine, tbh a summer tyre will do in most situations as it’s getting warmer and warmer we aren’t seeing much in the way of winters......

The best summer tyre I’ve had on were Michelin Diamaris which didn’t seem to ever wear out..... they were M and S Rated but that really has no basis or standard to adhere to.... and as far as I can remember weren’t much cop in the cold and ice.... There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

I ran Diamaris in the summer & Vreds in the winter - great combo for the L322 Smile

Summer & winter Contis on the L405 seem pretty good - but I've not run anything else to compare to.

It's not just the summer wear that's an issue for winter tyres - their performance is also degraded - some people ran Vreds all year round & seemed fine from a wear point of view - not sure I'd fancy the brake test comparison on a warm dry road though.....

Ultimately you have to figure out your priorities & accept compromises from there.
