If it were me, and it's clearly not, and your main reason to do this trip is primarily to see the northern lights, as opposed to doing a "road trip with a purpose", I'd fly to Iceland, hire a car and do it from there.
As with all natural phenomena, you have to get lucky with timings. I've been to Iceland with work half a dozen times in the past 2 years and saw them once. I've lost count of the amount of times I heard disappointed tourists say that a northern lights tour had to be cancelled due to bad weather but they do put you on another tour FOC should that happen.

Good luck whatever you decide, I'm sure ti'll be the adventure of a lifetime Thumbs Up Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue

Just a thought Pete, but worth you thinking in advance about....
What will be your maximum fuel tank range between top ups ??
I remember sweating a couple of times in my P38 diesel with 22-24 mpg.

One funny thing I remember about driving around Hardanger.
You would go for miles and not see another car, then suddenly you would go round a bend and be in a line of standing traffic.
The cause... the main road would suddenly lead you to a floating ferry road, very similar to crossing Windermere from the Hawkshead side. Very rarely shown on the map I had., and only taking 8 or ten cars at a time.

Just in case you have not already done so, you might enjoy the Youtube films of Harry Metcalfe of "Harry's Garage" taking a Rolls Royce Silver Shadow he had bought for £4,100 on Ebay to the Arctic Circle and then to see the northern lights. I'd like to take my motorcycle to Norway, but not at a time when one can see the northern lights... Only Range Rovers since 1988

Mike, thanks for that..

Eirik34, great info, thanks.

If the E6 is not recommended at that time of year is the E4 or E45 the best/prettiest route..?

Cheers

A clarification: the western route - west coast of Norway - is E39 (or variants around that route), via Stavanger, Bergen and Ålesund to Trondheim. E6 is via Oslo over the mountains Rondane and Dovrefjell to Trondheim. Both E6 and E39 can be driven during the winter, but with the shorter days, less daylight, I don't think that you'll get full "return" (benefit) of taking the extra distance via E39 - round the west coast of Norway. But E6 is reallly a nice route as well!
I haven't driven to Tromsø myself, but know many who has. Fastest route is through Sweden, but most say that route is not very exiting, driving through woods and forests for hours and hours...

Reg fuel; it shouldn't be a problem to find a petrol station when you need it if you drive the main routes. I drove a 2 days return trip from Stavanger to Ålesund (northern part of the west coast) late April - used appr 110 liter of diesel driving 1200 km these 2 days.

If it's of interest, Harry Metcalfe (Harry's Garage on YouTube) did a pretty good 2 part video about driving an old Rolls Royce he'd bought on Ebay to Norway and the Arctic Circle:

Eirik34, thanks, dare say I will have some more questions for you if that's OK... Pete

Ah, sorry CS - I missed that you'd posted the same - I was looking at multiple screens whilst working, and clearly not paying enough attention to FFRR!

If Harry can do it in a Roller that does 15 mpg, I'm sure I can do it in a S/C that does maybe 1 mpg more.. Thumbs Up Pete

Sneak over to the Disco3 forum and search for posts from DSL - their road trip champion. He has a number of posts detailing road trips under taken all over Europe and a lot of ones to Scandinavia including one where the engine of his disco3 went wrong in a terminal way (not tempting any fate). I am sure he did one to Tromso or if it wasn’t Tromso it was definately very north.

Found the post I was thinking about - https://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/off-road-tr...ght=Tromso

Make a brew before reading as it is about 28 pages long and very pic heavy. 2008 TDV8

I have driven to Stockholm a few times, via channel tunnel, ferry to hook of Holland and Ferry to Hamberg. I live on the south coast so these options made more sense to me.

I would check the price of possible sea crossings against time and fuel costs as when I did it (a few years back now) the cost of the ferry to Denmark far out weighed what id spend on fuel going a longer route and was only a few hours difference, plus the timing were better.

The roads in Sweden are generally wider / faster than in Norway but as has been said above, depends what sort of journey you want.

Also dont forget the tolls on bridges between the Danish Islands (great belt bridge) and the one to Malmo, alternatively check the ferry between Helsingor and Helsingborg. Its only a 30 min crossing and used to cost about the same as the bridge and makes for a good break in the journey.

If you do take this route, stock up on beer and wine in Denmark - lots cheaper than Denmark and Norway but be very carful as their drink drive limits are lower than ours.
