Cam cover gasket on 4.4 BMW Exxon Valdez | |
The cover on the passenger side has always been leaking. I did it a while back and didn't seem to last 5 mins. Did it again at the this week and didn't last a day.
I used a little bit of Permatex Black Ultra on the half moons and timing cover joints. Followed the instructions and to install the cover finger tight, leave for an hour, torque to spec. The surface was spotless and wiped over with acetone . The cam cover was cleaned and all the groves for the gasket cleaned, yet there is still oil just below where the timing case cover join is next to the dipstick.
When I did it first time, a couple of the studs came out with the cap nuts. I refitted them back with a bit of blue Loctite and noticed that sat a little bit lower than the rest. Then when installing these back, some of the other nuts bottomed out before I thought they were really tight enough to clamp the gasket down.
All new gaskets were used both times and the new gaskets for the nuts and bolts too.
Anyone had a similar problem ? Kinda driven me mad to do it twice and failed.
