Quote for gearbox oil change & service

Hi guys,

Bought a 2009 L322 FF (now on 84,000miles) just under a year ago and I'm looking to put it through it's first major service under my ownership, I've contacted a local specialist for quotes and he has come back with the following:

An ( A ) service is the smaller of the two services and is and oil change. For you vehicle the estimate is £302.53 inc vat.

A ( B ) service is oil change + all the filters, so pollen, air and fuel. Estimate for this service is £499.49 inc vat.

Transmission wise the gearbox is actually due a oil change every 10 years or 150000 miles which ever is first.

Cost wise for this your looking at £684.61 inc vat


First of all is this good value? Being new to RR I would like to make sure I am not being ripped off. Secondly he has also stated that it would be likely I will need potential transfer and differential oil changes as well taking the projected cost to around £1,500 for a service. Does this sound right?

I have also attached their service intervals document for your perusal.

I've cut'n'pasted the service menu from Mansfield 4x4 in Bury St Edmunds to give you a price comparison.
Assuming the Inspection 2 is the same as your 'B' service, yours is about £100 dearer.
My two pennyworth thinks the gearbox service price is rather high & also depends on what gearbox service they do. My 4.4 TDV8 had a 'megaflush' where 99% of the oil is flushed out & replaced, an ordinary gearbox & filter change only gets 40%-60% of the oil out, there's a difference of opinion on any forum whether one is better than the other. Unfortunately [or fortunately] I have 'oil ocd' & had "all" the oils changed when I bought my RR last September, that way, you're starting from afresh. If you can afford it, do 'all' the oils, it's then done & dusted then.

There are forum members on here that live in your vicinity & I'm sure they'll give you a heads up on a decent & trusted specialist. Give them time to have their breakfast & the carers to come & go & they'll come back to you Laughing

IMO £684 for the gear box change is good value. I assume they will only use ZF oil ( around £20/ltr and you'll need around 7 ltrs) plus genuine filters etc. i had my Indy do mine and it makes a difference. Welcome Rosie J - The Newer Kid on the Block

With respect Markwood, oil @£150 plus ZF filter @ £150 = £300 which leaves £380 for labour? Seems to be rather steep, happy to be proved wrong. 2012 Orkney Grey Westminster 4.4TDV8 with Ivory interior.........nice!

Agree, but we talking costs before mark up- and pre VAT. £20/lt + vat + filter + vat + mark up would soon get you closer to £400 i'd think. Then labour etc...
Sometimes we have to realise the cost to DIY vs Cost to get a garage to do it will always show a huge difference. We can go cheap / Britpart - on the drive and save a huge amount, or do it my way and let someone else get dirty for the fun of it Very Happy Welcome Rosie J - The Newer Kid on the Block

Just a bit of info I change the oil and filters in gearbox every 30k so nearly once a year for me cost me 450 at a local garage but that is a really good deal

I've just had a look on youtube with regards to changing the oil and it looks fairly simple. Might well try it myself to be honest and save £150. The only question would be that you lose the service history of the car as you cannot really stamp the service book yourself, how do you guys get around this?

I think it would be worth getting the gearbox flush/oil change at a garage however. This would be far out of my comfort zone.

My 2p worth...

Engine, Transfer box and both axles are a pretty easy DIY job if you have the tools.

The shelf life of most oils is about 5 years so yours are well past their best.

Only buy genuine oil, do not buy oils that state they meet the same standards, they might not have the correct friction modifiers that your fatty needs...

Leave the gearbox to a garage, it's a pain to do and can get messy on the drive...

I think that quote you have is rather high, ask what you are getting for it, a full oil change or a drop and fill ? does it include a sump and filter ?

If you keep all the receipts for the parts you buy and note the mileage most guys are happy with that come sale time, at your age of fatty I would say condition is more important..

Use some of the money you save to buy some more tools to save more money next time... Thumbs Up Pete

^^^+1. Get the Gearbox service done by a pro, with documents, but do the rest yourself and save on this side.

Diffs oils could not be easier to replace, T-box is also very easy on your drive as long as you have a syringe.

G-box service is a bit more difficult and you'd want proof that it has been done for you SH.

As above, transfer and diffs are an easy job.
Main gearbox. I had my Megaflushed at 85K and 8yrs old as a preventative maintenance. Bodsy, a mobile guy did it alongside a load of others on my drive one day.
Hampshire = Both Keith Gott and AJ Land Rovers (both nr Alton) can Megaflush. Archie Buchanan is the guy to chat to at AJ and James Holland at Keith G. SLR in Haslemere are also a good place but no Megaflush.
Rovertune is close to you but no Megaflush machine but they know their onions and are A1 customer focussed.
A Megaflush will be less than £400 at most places. If you have issues with your box it won't cure it. Lots fall into this trap. Think of it like a whole oil change for your gearbox as a normal "drop" won't empty the torque convertor.
I'd echo the above and get a reputable place to do the gearbox either "drop and fill" or Megaflush.

This is what I do: I use my local garage for normal stuff. Only one mechanic is allowed to touch my car as he is an LR enthusiast and knows the motors. Any other "special" stuff then I take it to where I believe it will be looked after correctly. Hope that makes sense. 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Buckingham Blue with Ivory and clear glass = "Rory"
