United Kingdom 2006 Range Rover Vogue Td6 Zambezi Silver
GM gearbox replacement West Sussex/Hampshire/Surrey.

The gearbox in our Td6 is knackered (almost unheard of on these!) and I need to decide whether to get it repaired, or not. I have had a quote from an independent Land Rover specialist which seems a lot at £3,400.

Can anyone recommend a garage who could do this for a reasonable amount in West Sussex/Hampshire/Surrey?

Ok. Thanks.

It doesn't want to engage 5th and possibly 4th, unless you have very little throttle. It's gone into trans fail safe mode. The code reader is saying '5th gear incorrect ratio'. The specialists I took it to think it points to a mechanical failure and want to fit a recon unit but £3,400 seems steep to me and I don't suppose that the car is worth a great deal more than that, probably £4,000-4,500.

I've got to go in today, I'll ask them for a 'wet finger in the air' price.

They would repair on site.

Thanks for the advice on this.

I spoke to STA Transmissions in Aylesbury last week and they gave me a much more reasonable quote of £1,850 + VAT, which included fitting several Sonnax valves (only has one at the moment), improvements to the pump and a couple of other things I have forgotten. Seems like good value, so I am dropping it off there next Saturday for the work to be done on Monday 9th.

At least we will have a second car again and something to tow the horse trailer, other than my van. The plan is to sell the Range Rover and the trailer, when we find a horsebox, but that might take a few months.

I'll be interested in your experience with STA. I have been considering getting them to give my 6 speed box (2008MY) a diagnostic check and megaflush and possible solenoids. I have very occasional judder in 3rd or 4th and occasional reluctance to kick down and go. Previously a 2008MY Tonga Green Vogue SE 3.6 TDV8

I did manage to speak to them and they said the price was about right. that is one of the few auto boxes they don't repair on site so would have to buy it in and change.

Dropped the Range Rover in at STA today, after shredding a trailer tyre on the M25!

Had a good chat with one of the guys there and he seemed to be very knowledgeable and helpful. Hopefully it should be ready to collect next Saturday.

A rather late update on this post.

When I dropped the RR off the guy who worked at the garage said that he would be interested in buying it. I didn't take it too seriously until he phoned me again a few days later. We agreed a price and he took the car as it was.

When I net him a week later to sort out the V5 he told me had stripped the box and that the 4th/5th gear shaft had unwound itself. He said that these are becoming very difficult to find and if you fit a used one as part of a re-build you can never tell how long it is going to last.

That's it for RR ownership for a while. 2 gearbox re-builds in 4 years is too much!

I knew all about the GM5 box when we bought the car, so I went for one with a newly reconditioned 'box in February 2016. This failed after 6000 miles in July 2016 and was repaired under warranty but I had to have the 'box removed and shipped to Leeds. I tried to claim the costs back but the company went into liquidation. That lasted until February this year when the shaft failed.
