4.4 tdv8 high pressure pump noise

Tying to chase a noise/vibration at around 2500rpm.
Having a listen under the bonnet, how noisy should the fuel pump be?
Even at idle mine is the noisiest thing under the bonnet.

I've often wondered that on mine. I think it's very noisey, clicky, ticky if you know what I mean.

Do you get any noise/vibration around 2500?
Noticeable between 2 and 3k?

No mate I don't. Bare in mind the second turbo usually kicks in at 2500rpm.

Bumping this. Would anyone mind recording the noise of their HPFP through the rev range?
Idle and slowly between 2000 and 3000 rpm.

I'm sure mine is abnormally noisy. It is not causing any running issues/fault code but there is vibration around 2500 rpm.

Not sure how much use this will be, but I recorded this the other day as I wasn't sure whether was a noise at idle or not:

It's not through the rev range, sorry, just at idle, but maybe useful. I'll do another one through the rev range if I remember.

Bit of back story to this.

When I bought the car earlier this year it had a vibration from 2k rpm that got worse at 2500 and was gone by 3000.
Can feel throughout the car.
At partial throttle it also made loud clatter sound.

Shortly after I had coolant level warning and the fan had cut through coolant hose. Damaging the fan.
That was the clatter noise.

Coolant pipe repaired and new fan fitted. Bought a branded Denso. Britpart box turned up.

Since then the vibration has remained.
I have lived with it as before and after those rpm it is fine.

Work has been a little quieter so have had time to mess around with it.

Tried injection pump today to no avail.

Also ran it up with drive belt disconnected. Also no change.

I have ordered a fan pulley unit so will try that. Fan spins true but maybe bearing was damaged?

I also suffer from the irritation of the ticking and clicking. Will also record tomorrow at both idle and faster. I do get an element of vibration but will confirm at what revs again tomorrow. My fan does wobble a bit when not engaged but runs true when engaged, is this normal ?

Glad in a way others have the same ticking, couldn’t find anything anywhere else on the web. Hoping it is a common noise and not something untoward. Let’s hope we find an answer.

I think it'd be a great resource for the forum if we had a library of noises/videos like this, what sounds normal for each engine and what doesn't, I'm sure it'd help when diagnosing problems.

I guess many already know what sounds normal and what doesn't but personally, the "right" car came up for me before I'd had a chance to listen to few (damn Covid!) so the only TDV8 I've ever heard up close is mine and hence, I don't know if it sounds normal or not! Smile

All I can say is it runs great and there's no warnings, nor engine faults logged on the GAP tool (there's codes going back 10k KM's but nothing engine related), so I think the engine's probably ok :\

I will get a recording of mine tomorrow.
I can’t believe it is normal. It’s a noticeable vibration apart 2500rpm.

Very minimal ticking compared to your average Diesel engine.

If you have vibrations around 2500 check front drive shaft. Mines did that then eventually broke🥴

JNC, I did a cold start the other day and while looking under the bonnet everything was quietish. Then after about 10 minutes of idling the pump went really loud. Do you think the fuel cooler has a valve on it that suddenly opens and the pump has to start pushing fuel through it and that could be the noise? Clutching at straws here.

I took it for a drive this morning. It is definitely quieter. There is still vibration at around 2500. But no noise as previous.
It had definitely got louder from when I bought it.
Obviously the 2 issues were separate but made prominent by one another.

It does it stationary so that rules out driveshaft.

Vibration can only be caused by something spinning or wobbling. Have you checked all the pulleys are running straight? Do the drive belts run smooth? I've heard the crankshaft pulley can fail. Look to see if it wobbles at all.
