Extremely annoying brake squeal (video).

So this squeal is getting worse. Light squeal when driving and gets horrible when brakes are lightly pressed. Goes away a bit when brakes are pressed harder. Extremely annoying and embarrassing on a $145k car. This normal for these cars? Sign of me needing to take the pads out and putting a ton of lube on the backsides? Pads F&B have a lot of life. Rear rotors are new and OEM. Front rotors I’m not sure what they are but they don’t look in bad shape. 2014 FF Autobiography 5.0 SC

Took it for a drive and none of the wheels felt hot. It did seem to get worse/louder when I torqued down the lug nuts more.
The squeal is coming from the front passenger. There’s also a tapping sound like a pebble rotating around inside the wheel on the rear passenger. I performed the parking brake maint mode and release to see if maybe it was stuck or something...but same sound after doing that. I tried to capture it in this vid.

Somehow I doubt thats a brake rotor / pad squeal, its too tinny which generally points to either the shield or caliper pad springs..

I would remove the caliper completely and look at whether there is any contact point between the brake pad springs and the rotor..

But, and probably most important is the rotor shield, I have had it before on my L322 where the very bottom of the shield was bent upwards just slightly, which caused the exact same noise.

The shield bend damage was caused by myself if I recall, I had used a trolley jack to lift the suspension with the wheel removed during a suspension airbag change and I had positioned the jack head on the bottom of the rotor, and stupidly bent the thin plate shield up just a little, but enough to cause the self same squeal, does not take much to bend these things..

And then of course the stone between the shield and rotor, but somehow I doubt that's it...

I feel like this started after hitting a huge pothole pulling into a parking lot. Since then I picked up this squealing and also some studdering in the brake pedal during breaking occasionally (not always). I decided to get that wheel re-spunbalanced and that seemed to fix the studdering feeling in the brake pedal. The loud squealing still remains.

I have ordered new ceramic pads front (r1 concepts) and rear (akebono) as I wanted to tackle the dust with the current pads anyway. Hopefully this fixes it or I see whats wrong once I get in there. I'll check the shields etc. If its still there after pad replacement I might order new rotors. 2014 FF Autobiography 5.0 SC

As said check for something caught in the shields, that sounds like a bit of gravel caught between the rotor and the backplate to me....

When you lube you the front pads it’s not just backs which need lube. The side edges of the metal backing on the pads should be lubed as well acording to the WM.

Did that with the TRW pads on mine and they have been squeal free so far. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Good to hear NM.....Yea I lube them up good. So annoying hearing a squeal coming from this kind of vehicle.

I wanted to do ceramics anyway so no $ lost....but will check for those stones while I'm in there 2014 FF Autobiography 5.0 SC

There is a small groove/line On the rotor about a 1/2-1” from the Hub....I don’t think that would cause all the racket though
As you can see the whole rotor is being used. Then again the driver side rotor doesn’t have that groove/line

Well I took off the wheels on the side that was squealing and checked the dust covers....not touching anywhere. Looked for stone stuck somewhere...didn’t see any. Moved around the spring clips front and rear and dabbed some anti seize lube on them then put the wheels back on. no dice....squeal is just the same.

I’m fearing i might need a caliper rebuild or new rotors. My new ceramic pads will be here next week so I’ll throw those in and lube everything up and see what I get. If squeal is still there it probably means caliper rebuild or new front rotors (rear rotors were replaced a 2-3k ago).

How hard/involved is rebuilding these Brembo Autobiography calipers? Is there a kit to make the job easy? I’m hoping this is a easy at home DIY[/img] 2014 FF Autobiography 5.0 SC

It shouldn’t have the groove in it.

Can you hear anything when you spin the wheels. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Not really. You have to be moving like 5-10mph. I couldn’t spin it freely....It was just me and I didn’t feel comfortable starting it up with just the passenger side on jack stands. I wish the gear selector knob would come up to be able to put it into neutral without starting it.

Kind of agree about the groove. Maybe I’ll just buy new front rotors and put them on the same time with the pads and be done with it. Hopefully that fixes it.

I’d just need to decide if I want to go with Cheaper OEM quality blank face Zimmerman (All 4 would match). Or buy the Disc Italia Fronts (rear 2 wouldn’t match and still be blank face but are brand new OEM LR disks so no point in changing those yet) 2014 FF Autobiography 5.0 SC

The genuine LR discs aren’t mega money over here, ask robin at duckworthparts, for a price. Robin.Hall@duckworth.co.uk

They are smooth discs but being the size they are, and having gone through the testing they are more than up to the job of stopping the car.... There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Yea just decided to go with the Zimmerman blanks. 88$ each shipped. Figure I can get the drilled DI when I need to replace all 4 in the future. Maybe if my brembo calipers were the the painted option from the factory and drew attention I’d get the DI now...but the 14 ATB just have the plebeian pot metal look haha. Laughing

Hopefully this takes care of the issue. Should have the rotors and pads in time for the weekend 2014 FF Autobiography 5.0 SC

fixed by replacing front rotors and ceramic pads...for about 2k miles. Now the "round and around" squeal is back but very slight.....when lightly applying the brakes. Wondering if it's going to get worse or this is just normal for these rigs 2014 FF Autobiography 5.0 SC
