Beware of Renewal Price Hikes

I've just had my A-Plan renewal quote and its gone from £513.85 to £895.06 (74% Increase). Ageas
That’s on the basis of no changes to my policy, no claims and 10 Year NCD.

The explanation is that there are high number of Accidents over this last year and so premiums are increasing (despite being in lockdown and despite Admiral giving partial refunds... for the low risk / claims in lockdown).

So off to comparison sites and the same underwriter (Ageas) is 3rd cheapest at £ 541 Comparethemarket

I unded up going with an even cheaper insurer AXA.
So, beware of the A-Plan price hikes. I did mention that I’m part of this forum and they are sponsors, but they were having none of it. -------------------------------------

I got a quote from them just after they became sponsors I think... not very competitive unfortunately. 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

I made the mistake of going for the cheapest quote without checking the windscreen cover properly. You can guess what happened the following week..... 2009 3.6 V8 (MY2010) - my first ever diesel!
2004 4.4 V8 Petrol Vogue - now gone

Hi bwelton,

Unfortunately Range Rovers specifically have shown a rise in thefts (not necessarily accidents), I commend Admiral for offering the £25 rebate - especially so early into lockdown before any real statistics could develop. Their risk profile of their insured must have shown a decline, however, this doesn't always stretch across all insurers.

Our specialist 4x4 insurers have a high percentage of RR's in their risk profiles and as such that statistical data will be different from say Admiral who predominantly insure standard, day to day vehicles. Ageas who you have gone with is the standard insurer - not quite the same cover as the specialist arm of the insurer Ageas Optima (actually quite a few differences to level of cover).

Hopefully we can win you back in the future, sorry we weren't competitive this year. As much as we'd love to, we can't win them all.

Whilst I don't have old fatty any more I was with Admiral and changed the policy over to my i3. We have my wife's car (Outlander PHEV) on a multi car policy too. Renewal came through at £590 for the pair, slightly lower than last year and we did get the £25 per car refund during lockdown.
I was ready to push the button but thought Id just try my previous insurers Direct Line, for the two cars £421 with lower excess etc.
Contacted Admiral to say don't renew and they came back with £430. This really gets my backup, why didn't they make the offer straight away? They don't reward loyalty so on principle I wouldnt have stayed even if they'd equalled the offer. BMW i3 Electric Car (170 bhp mobility scooter)

That's always been my stance on renewals, I won't stay with them if they offer to drop the price when I call to cancel as I don't like someone trying to rip me off. MY19 SDV8 Autobiography

Scotland 2008 Range Rover Vogue SE TDV8 Java Black

Insurance companies always bump up auto-renewals ( I'm sure I read somewhere it's usually by 20%), simply because they think people will assume the price is as good as it can be (as an existing customer) and won't shop around.

I do this dance every year, it gets tiring Censored Got - 2008 TDV8 Vogue SE in Java black

I think you will find the same problem with breakdown cover ie: Green flag up £6 this year with no call out`s went on there site and started a new quote and got it cheaper?
Just makes no sense Question

As a broker we obviously look around at renewal and use multiple insurers - sometimes even if we are keeping you with the same insurer we are returning you to them as a new customer because many (not all) have renewal discounts which are less than a new customer discount. Some insurers there's no difference but as a broker we check this before inviting.
