Tow module wiring?

Hi all - a strange one - for the first time I used my towbar last week but I had no lights to the board. I opened the rear cubby and I could see the trailer module was connected but noticed the were two smaller plugs one white one black one male one female not connected.
I plugged them together and all was working as expected and got the trailer led on the dash.

When I was done I unplugged the light board but I then was getting check trailer lights on the dash and the led was still on. The only way I could fix it was separating the two plugs.

It’s like some relay or switch isn’t working? Any ideas? Current stable:
2006 BMW M6
2007 4.2 V8 S/C FF
Gone:
2002 4.4 V8 FF
